Use our shaft flex chart as your starting point, then personalize your choice. Depending on your height, weight, paddling style, and physical condition, you’ll either choose a stiffer shaft, stay with the recommended option, or select a softer shaft.
If you’re heavier, taller, or prefer powerful, aggressive strokes, consider a stiffer shaft (lower flex number). If you’re lighter, recovering from an injury, or favor longer, relaxed paddling sessions, a shaft with more flex (higher number) will typically be beneficial.
One factor alone might not justify changing from the recommended stiffness unless you’re already at the upper or lower end of a range. However, if two or more factors align, even paddlers in the middle range should consider adjusting. The goal is to find the perfect balance for your paddling comfort and performance.

Selecting the correct shaft is a function of your paddle length and weight. A lower flex number relates to less flex and produces a stiffer paddle (lower flex rating). Heavier and taller paddlers will need a stiffer shaft whereas smaller and lighter paddlers need more flex (higher flex rating). Length affects stiffness, select based on your paddle height and weight. Stiffer is not always better, the right shaft for your weight and height, is the best shaft.

For your peace of mine, we have a standard 1-year warranty to cover faulty manufacturing. Thanks to hot glue assembly it is possible to replace any damaged parts. Paddle length paddle depends on your height, the type of standup paddling you are doing and the board you use. The correct length will protect your body against injury and maximize your performance. For recreational paddling and inflatables your paddle will be longer while for SUP surfing paddlers use shorter paddles. Use our paddle length guide to determine the correct length. Refer to the paddle specific guides on each product page.
Yes, our 1-piece paddles are assembled with hot glue. You can heat up the shaft just below the handle to remove it, and then shorten the shaft. We have a number of guides on our YouTube channel which explain the process. Be sure to use quality extra-strength, high temp, hot glue and not hobby grade glue. This is particularly useful if you move to different board or change focus.
We offer paddles for all types of standup paddling, racing, touring, foiling, surfing, and all-round recreation. Finding the right paddle which best fits your needs in terms of performance, price and preference is extremely important. Check out our guide to determine which paddle is best for you.
Choosing the right paddle for your experience, budget, and needs
Blade size depends on paddler weight, height, the type of standup paddling you are doing and any prior medical issues. Bigger blades offer more power and are suited to heavier paddlers while smaller paddler will want to select a much smaller blade size. Many paddlers are using the wrong size blade and that is reducing their enjoyment of the sport. Use our blade size guide to determine the correct size for you.
All Black Project paddles have carbon reinforced edges and can withstand a good amount of abuse. The use of protective tape is not needed for general consumer use.
All Athlete Series and Ultimate Series paddles, as well as our 3-piece travel paddles, are supplied complete with a Black Project Paddle Bag unless otherwise stated. Some models are supplied without a bag. For example, the FoilX does not include a paddle bag. Bag inclusion is clearly shown on each product page. Black Project Paddle Bags can also be purchased separately. Some US and international retailers may offer paddles without a bag at an adjusted price. We strongly recommend protecting your paddle with a quality padded bag, ideally a Black Project Paddle Bag.
Paddles are very expensive to design, produce and ship, hence the price which you pay for your Black Project paddle is extremely reasonable. We have cut out a number of business layers and work directly with customers and smaller independent retailers to ensure that markups are reasonable. If we operated a more traditional business structure paddles would be 50-100% more expensive. Standup paddling is a small sport so it is hard to produce enough units to benefit from mass production and gain significant economies of scale.
Yes, our componentized paddle system enables you to swap or replace parts. If you decide that you want to change blade, shaft, or handle, due to preferences or damage, thanks to our hot glue assembly, this is possible and saves you needing to buy a completely new paddle. This is especially important for SUP foiling.
SUP paddles are not one-size-fits-all, and different factors come into play when determining the ideal paddle length. That’s why many of our SUP paddles offer a wide 30cm (12 inches) range of non-twist adjustment. This means you can easily adjust the paddle length to suit your height, paddle board, water conditions, and paddling style. After three 2+ hour paddles… well, actually after about a minute on the first paddle, it was clear the Hydro Tempo-X was going to greatly improve my precious time on the water. I needed a more powerful paddle for our tandem board that carries my wife, a 65 lb dog, another 85 lb dog, and myself. Also wanted to paddle solo, so I took a calculated chance on what for me is an expensive paddle. I purchased the three-piece adjustable version, large blade. So far I’ve taken it up river against strong current and down, and on flat water. The power is there, and the convenience and adjustability of the three piece is fantastic, without sacrificing stiffness or adding any slop.The fit and finish are so good, and the bag is a serious piece of gear in it’s own right. It’s not often these days that hopeful expectations are met, much less exceeded. Just thinking about it makes me want to drop what I’m doing and get on my board, lol.
2024 hydro tempo paddle

Started using the tempo paddle last year after using the lava, which my wife now uses and loves. Use the tempo for recreational paddling and some 5km races. The main difference I find between the two is the tempo appears to catch more water and hence a stronger pull when trying to keep up with the younger guys.
60 years old but no issues with the stiffness of the paddle and shaft on my body. Maybe if paddling 10km or more at race pace I may pinch my wife’s lava because of the more forgiving flex and prevent any potential strain or stresses to the upper body. Excellent paddle for a cross section of abilities, just use the guides for the correct blade size.

I love this paddle! It’s so lightweight and sturdy. It has been a game changer for me. Being so lightweight has helped put less stress on my bad shoulder, which enables me to paddle longer with less pain. The adjustable shaft allows me to quickly change the length to adapt to the water conditions. Being able to disassemble it into 3 pieces is also a plus when traveling. The bag is well made and protects the paddle nicely. I had some issues with my order but Chris and his team resolved it quickly. Overall, I have been very happy with the performance and quality of this paddle. I definitely recommend it!
Faster and less fatigued

Significant upgrade for my other 3 piece paddles that were as expensive. Engineering and attention to details make a huge difference. Perfect stiffness and ergonomics. My speed has improved and my body feels less fatigued for my standard 10K paddles. I sometimes use it to SUP surf after my ocean paddles, and my only complaint is that the fine sand here makes disassembly (paddle to mid section) difficult to near impossible.

I’ve paddled with the 3-piece Tempo X only a few times, but can already make some conclusions. It’s a well made paddle, all joints are glued very cleanly. The paddle assembly out of a nice padded bag is a doddle, thanks to the snug-fitting lower hex joint (I really like how it clicks into place, there’s zero play). and anti-twist upper plastic cam lock, with centering guide and length markings on the top section (markings in cm as well as inches, they thought of metric-minded people!). The blade is very compact, and I had some internal debate when selecting the size, but after consultation with Chris agreed to order the recommended size M for my needs – I’m glad I did, as the blade has perfect, well-centered catch, the typical BP swashbuckler that I’ve come to expect based on several years of my use of Hydro Flow X. Overall this is a nice, quality travel paddle with a bag that should help it stay looking like new for a long time.

I have had the Black Project Hydro Tempo-X 3-piece for about two months now and I thought it was about time to write a review. This paddle is SWEET! I have put in over 100 miles using the paddle with my 14’ inflatable in lakes, slow moving rivers, creeks, bays, open ocean, and the surf line and it has excelled in all conditions. Moving from a fixed paddle I have been impressed with the stiffness and ability of the paddle to cut through the water. I have had to get used to compensating for the adjustment clamp when shifting the paddle between hands however, it has not taken away from the experience of the paddle. The stiffness is just like my fixed paddle, gone are the shaky joints that are found with other adjustable paddles. Other than the clamp, you have no idea this is a 3-piece paddle. In Short, I love racing and paddling with this paddle! I purchased the paddle with the intention of using it to travel to SUP Races and after flying with it to events in Norther California and Texas I am happy to report that traveling with the paddle and included travel bag was a breeze. On flights I can check it with my iSUP and off I go, no extra fees.In addition to this being a great paddle, the Black Project Team customer service is the best in the business. I broke my previous paddle less than a week before my next race and started to panic. I ordered this paddle on Sunday night, put a little note in the comments section saying I needed the paddle by Thursday, and the paddle arrived Tuesday afternoon. Amazing! I have a feeling they didn’t even need my notes, they are just always this good. I hope you find this review helpful and if you are looking for that perfect travel (or paddle in general), this is it! TempoX 3 piece XL Paddle

I’ll start by saying that I was a bit disappointed in this paddle at first. I upgraded from a Quickblade Kanaha that I liked very much, until the grip broke on me – a fixable thing, but when I saw it was a weak point, I knew I couldn’t trust I anymore. I’ve heard Black Project recommended by a lot of paddlers, so I decided to give it a shot. When I messaged them through their website looking for advice, Chris responded quickly and agreed the TempoX would be a good fit for me. At 6’4” and 225lbs, he felt the XL sized blade made the most sense. Customer support from Black Project is phenomenal. The first time I took my new paddle for a ride, I started to have second thoughts on my purchase. The paddle end is slightly heavier than my quick blade was (larger blade = more weight), and I struggled with keeping the paddle straight, particularly in wind and chop. Overall, I just found it a little awkward. After five or six uses, I got the hang of it and completely changed my mind. One issue I’ve always had with my stroke is I have a hard time keeping straight when I’m paddling on my left side. With my old Quickblade, I compensated for this by adjusting my blade angle at the shaft. The TempoX has a non-twist handle design, so this is no longer possible. I was forced to work on correcting my faulty stroke, which I’ve managed to do (I’m 80% there, anyway). In terms of performance, I’m consistently paddling a half mile an hour faster with this paddle, and when paddling up wind (which I do often) it’s incredible the speed I can maintain despite the air resistance. Wind, chop, current – none of it phases the TempoX. Most importantly, I can paddle much further without overtaxing myself. With this paddle, I’m three miles out before I know it. Lastly, the paddle look super cool, if you’re into aesthetics. I highly recommend Black Project paddles. If you’re on the fence, it’s time to jump off and upgrade!
