Paddle Info & FAQs
Black Project is the global leader in paddling innovation. The FoilX features a single shallow scoop design with extended dihedral shaped edges. This design is optimized for high cadence and high-power output, and it delivers forward thrust in a smooth and controlled manner. The FoilX incorporates REACT+ Technology (RE+T), with two external carbon plates, amplifying blade power, responsiveness, and energy return. Strategically placing these laminates on the outer layer of the structure multiplies the overall effect, resulting in an impressive stiffness-to-weight ratio. The RE+T is tuned for each blade size, ensuring optimal flex tailored to paddler size. The distinctive design of the FoilX incorporates our Power Ridge (PRT) and Reduced Blade Volume (RBVT) technologies which when combined, lead to a strong, light, and efficient blade. With too many features to list, when choosing Black Project, you are assured that you are putting your performance, safety, and foiling stoke, in the hands of a company, who like you, only accepts excellence.
The all-new Tour Carbon shaft series is a key component of the FoilX that brings reduced weight, added power, responsiveness, grip, and comfort. The tapered oval design increases stiffness in the lower shaft area for enhanced stability and power transfer to the blade. The more flexible and thinner round upper section helps to reduce fatigue. The oval-shaped middle-grip area provides a directional feel and a secure grip with a natural carbon-textured matte finish. Our lightest, most responsive shafts are built with 30T carbon. The Tour series offers four distinct profiles, each with various length and stiffness options.
The award-winning hollow carbon PowerGrip ensures that every ounce of effort is translated into forward motion; the ergonomic design maintains comfort throughout extended foil sessions.
- Long lasting comfort for SUP foiling.
- Improved connection between hand and paddle increases power.
- Hollow pre-prep carbon construction for reduced weight.
We have seven+ years experience working with foiling athletes in Hawaii. These athletes have benefited from our componentized paddle system with hot glue assembly; this enables all parts to be swapped or replaced as needed. Ideal for optimization but also in case of damage, this unique system is great for the paddler and better for the environment. The FoilX introduces our new X-Flex high density CNC foam core, which is both stiffer and more resistant to impact, this is combined with new higher modulus carbon laminates to increase strength, reduce weight, and enhance flex properties.
Replacement parts are available at a reduced cost throughout the life of your paddle. More details about our full policy will be published in due course.
The FoilX paddle sizing table below is a guide only. Actual choice will depend on several factors. On flat water go bigger, in windy conditions and small foils use a smaller blade for higher cadence, for surf a smaller blade is also good. Less experienced paddlers will benefit from a bigger blade whereas experienced paddlers will be able to use a smaller blade. Remember that we have already done the upsizing needed for foiling for you, select blade size based on weight.
| X-LARGE | Large | Medium | Small | X-SMALL |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Size (cm2) | 685 | 635 | 585 | 540 | 500 |
Size (in2) | 106.2 | 98.4 | 90.7 | 83.7 | 77.5 |
Paddler Weight (KG) | 90 – 110 | 80 – 100 | 70 – 90 | 60 – 80 | 50 – 70 |
Paddler Weight (lbs) | 200 – 245 | 175 – 220 | 155 – 200 | 130 – 175 | 110 – 155 |
Selecting the correct shaft is a function of your paddle length and weight. A lower flex number relates to less flex and produces a stiffer paddle (lower flex rating). Heavier and taller paddlers will need a stiffer shaft whereas smaller and lighter paddlers need more flex (higher flex rating). Length affects stiffness, select based on your paddle height and weight. Stiffer is not always better, the right shaft for your weight and height, is the best shaft.

The FoilX length guide below is a guide only. With lower aspect blades, a shorter paddle is preferable. For riding on higher volume boards or if you like mid-foiling strokes, then consider 1-2 inches (2.5 – 5cm) longer than your height for more reach. Remember that your new paddle will be assembled with hot glue, which means you can always shorten if needed. If your paddle is too long you will struggle to paddle at a high cadence.

“We embarked on a mission to push the limits of design, materials, and manufacturing processes, aiming to create a paddle that would further revolutionize the way people think about paddles and foiling altogether – the FoilX is the culmination of this effort – a natural evolution in paddle design, with a specific focus, delivering substantial performance gains.”

Amazing Paddle - flat water takes off are now easier!
Florian Martines-January 2, 2025 at 5:13 am
Just love this paddle, it’s the perfect balance between power and smoothness on the water, first flat water takes off are now easier. The paddle looks very solid, making this paddle a great investment over the next years, I also love the glue system which allows easy part replacement. Thanks Chris for all the advices and fast delivery (ordered December 27, received the 31 in France!!).
Foil X the best dw paddle
Michael-November 18, 2024 at 10:23 pm
This FoilX paddle is ridiculously good. Been using it on a ton of downwinders the past 2 months in South Africa and it has just been so awesome. Love the stiffness of the shaft too and the blade is the perfect balance of power and cadence for me at 93kg. So easy to take off and can paddle pump so nicely with it too to get up and over bumps and to keep me up on foil in tricky sections or when i make a mistake in line choice. Blown away. Also the height is perfect at 4cm above my head height. Everything is great from the get go and no tweaking needed!. I didn’t like another brand with a similar “low aspect” shape as I snapped two of their thin shafts mid stroke (first shaft was first use) and couldn’t trust it after that as always felt like it would give way and snap. Their blade had too much angle too and was too low aspect and wide and just felt uncomfortable to use it and I always seemed to hit my rails with it.
Your foilx blade is really feeling perfect. I never seem to slip with it either and hit my board rails or foil like other paddles. My only negative may be that it is a little bit heavier than your other surge and sprint X Paddles but I know it’s because of a stronger construction which I would rather have and lose a bit of weight savings knowing I am a bit safer from breaking a blade alone out at sea deep ocean 🙂
Thanks again Chris…super stoked.
This is it!

The foil X is the best, tons of low end and has a fast cadence and easy paddling compared to other brands in the same discipline.
Downwind Foiling - THE RIGHT CHOICE
avvgpamore-November 5, 2024 at 10:07 pm
I thought that paddle asking as was carbon made didn’t make the difference. Then I was lucky to try the FOIL X M size from a friend and also if it has an important price, I bought one in L size waiting 90kg. It really changed the power and the stability on my 8.6 board (130lt) I highly recommend also for beginners if they want to become pro’s 🔥💪🏻🔥
