The lightweight, powerful & responsive SUP paddle for surfers

Lightweight and strong, the SURGE was designed to meet SUP surfers’ specific needs and has become the paddle of choice for many APP World Tour athletes including; Mo Freitas, Leco Salazar, Lara Claydon, Vania Torres Olivieri and more.

Scooped dihedral blade shaping holds water in the power phase, delivering that quick acceleration needed to scratch into a set wave or escape the impact zone. To improve stability, the extended tapered scoop ensures you’ll get the most out of each stroke, even if you don’t get the full blade in the water.

Weighing from just 350 grams (12.3 oz), the SURGE is the lightest surf paddle on the market but doesn’t sacrifice durability in the process.

All Surge paddles come complete with our Paddle Bag ($125 value).

  1. Game-changer

    dolphin-July 13, 2024 at 7:07 am

More waves, better surfing. Moving to this surf specific paddle helped me catch more waves, surf better, and stay out longer. I cannot overstate the difference between other paddles and surfing with the Surge. If you want to catch more waves, surf better, and have longer sessions, the Surge should be your paddle of choice..

  2. This thing ROCKS

    gregaai-July 11, 2024 at 7:46 am

A few years ago I was new to SUP surfing, and started with the aluminum adjustable paddle that came with my board. I surf frequently – a few times a week, and within just a few months the shaft of my aluminum paddle snapped while paddling into a wave. From there I moved to a “carbon” adjustable paddle, which was definitely an upgrade but occasionally I’d have some odd shoulder/back pain after a session that I couldn’t figure out. Then once session the adjustment wasn’t tensioned properly and the top half flew into the ocean, never to be seen again. I went through a few other paddles and never really loved any of them.

Enter the Black Project Surge. First let me say I love having a fixed length paddle – no making sure it’s set correctly, no water penetration into the shaft. Grab it and go. Second, this thing is LIGHT but still powerful. You’ll instantly notice the difference. Lastly – the narrower shaft: it seemed like a risk to me, to order an expensive paddle with a narrow shaft not knowing how I’d like it. It’s amazing. These guys have put a ton of effort into making the best SUP Surf paddle on the market and it shows. Everything else including the grip, the ease of shortening the paddle as your skills improve (I’ve gone down 3 inches), the blade design – I can’t say enough good things about this paddle. 100% recommend to anyone on the fence.

  3. Great paddle

    rickb5142-July 11, 2024 at 3:56 am

Didn’t think a paddle would make that much difference in my surfing. I was wrong. Since I got my Surge , my wave count is way up and no more shoulder issues. I use to nick my rails a lot, now I rarely ever even touch them. I liked it so much, I bought a second one for my low volume boards. Definitely worth it.

    Robert Crowder-July 10, 2024 at 11:45 am

Very responsive and super light paddle. A bit pricy but worth it for the level of performance. Very sturdy too.

  6. Awesome paddle!

    Eugene Chan-July 9, 2024 at 12:46 pm

I LOVE THIS PADDLE! It is super light and lightning fast. I’m catching more waves and having longer sessions. Overall I’m super happy with the paddle and regret not making the upgrade sooner. Highly recommend!

  7. Black Project Surge

    edbarbarito-July 8, 2024 at 8:26 am

After going through multiple paddles I’ve determined that the Black Project Surge is the “next level” in equipment. I’ve increased wave count and reduced fatigue in one move by making this purchase. Paddle came promptly and included a high quality case/bag that is great for travel and accommodates other pieces of equipment as well. Great Purchase!

  8. Surge is killing it

    Alexander Wuensche-July 8, 2024 at 6:21 am

Surge is killing it. Love the quick response when in the surf. Super light paddle, amazing to handle in any kind of surf conditions. I am much quicker to paddle into the wave than before. I love the handle shape, amazing grip in the action.

  9. Surge rocks

    ktucker1968-July 8, 2024 at 5:12 am

Absolutely love this paddle. I was hesitant at first but after talking with the Black Project team, I was able to build my paddle to my specifications. There wisdom and input allow me to obtain the best paddle for my SUP surfing. So easy to get into the wave and handle on the face. Love the grip of this paddle which allows me intuitively to know how the blade is facing. Great paddle and great team. Thank you!

  10. Super Surge!

    Michael-July 8, 2024 at 5:07 am

I have the surge XL blade and shaft and it is my goto for SUP Surfing and SUP foil surfing. The best blade for me at 90kg , super easy on the body but still plenty of efficient power for hours and hours of use daily. Been using them for about 5 years now and can’t use anything else 🙂 Don’t waste your time with other paddles !

  11. Performance and Travel

    Jeff Cole-July 8, 2024 at 4:50 am

I have the Surge 3-piece paddle. Absolutely love it! Lightweight, solid paddle. the way the pieces connect eliminate any twisting of the handle. It’s well designed, lightweight, just the right amount of flex. The blade size and shape is perfect for quick acceleration to catch waves in the surf. Extremely happy with this paddle and would buy again. Highly recommend!

  12. Extended surf sessions

    Bradley Kelly-July 8, 2024 at 12:39 am

Crazy how much a solid paddle makes a difference. This has made catching waves a lot easier and extended the sessions for me. Super lightweight with perfect flex to go with wave after wave without leaving sore.

Customer service has been unbelievable during every purchase. I always get an email to verify I’m getting the right fit. Solid company with solid products.

  14. The best investment

    derauf-July 7, 2024 at 8:10 pm

I am an intermediate Sup Surfer. This paddle helped my surfing more than any other recent change. I can stroke more powerfully and faster and for far longer sessions and my shoulders, which are prone to injury, feel great .

  15. Danny from Oahu

    dsellers30-July 7, 2024 at 6:06 pm

I experienced many paddles throughout my years sup surfing. The surge is the most complete paddle I have used. Weight to strength is unmatched in a compact efficient paddle. Chris went out of his way to personally email me back on questions I had on blade size and shaft flex based on my structure and needs. Recommended the perfect paddle that has reduced shoulder strain I had been experiencing while maintaining that powerful catch I like in a paddle. No better sup surfing paddle in the market until BP makes a new Surge.

  16. Matt from Australia

    Matt Williams-August 4, 2023 at 1:03 pm

I’ve been sup surfing for around 8 years now, and these paddles are by far the best and the lightest I’ve ever used. I bought the Large and the Medium in blade size with the 75 Texcarbon shaft. Ive used both in different size wave sizes from 3ft to 8ft plus over head with my different size JP boards and wow!!. The slim shaft feels so good in the hand while you are paddling into the wave and definitely compliments my surfing. I really wish i had purchased these years ago! I love them. Chris was so so helpful to make sure i got it right, in choosing what was right for me so i wouldn’t get shoulder problems down the track. And he was bang on! Chris really knows his stuff it was a great experience he is a true professional. I can really vouch for these paddles as I’ve put them thru some really heavy surf conditions and came up trumps each time! I love them.
    Thanks again Chris.

  17. Great surf and all around paddle

    arikkopelman-June 15, 2023 at 8:10 pm

I’ve been SUP surfing and SUP paddling for over a decade and this is by far the best paddle I have ever owned. It’s super light, perfect flex and grip. I love the slim shaft design and the included case is top-notch. I know that this paddle was designed as a surf paddle, but I find it extremely comfortable for long range paddles also. This is definitely my go-to paddle in any conditions – surf or paddle. Chris was also very responsive and helped with everything. My order was international and everything worked out.

  18. Best surf paddle on the planet

    beneterris-May 25, 2023 at 10:20 am

The paddle offers the perfect balance of flex, weight and durability. I’ve been at it for about 10 years and have had the occasional shoulder injury with the other paddles in my quiver. Over the past 4 months using my new Surge, I’ve experienced no shoulder pain, increased time in the water, increased endurance, and better wave positioning and takeoff.

    mareugenio2000-May 19, 2023 at 10:31 pm

Fue un regalo para mi esposo, esta encantado por su ligereza y diseño a la hora de tomar la ola.
Magnifica compra y como siempre buenísima atención por parte del vendedor de 10,

  20. Surge

    scottnelson77-May 18, 2023 at 3:22 pm

Great paddle and customer service. My paddle snapped in half while on a wave. It was only a few months old at the time and Chris sent me a new shaft right away, no questions asked.

  21. More time in the water!

    laly.chaud-May 18, 2023 at 5:30 am

I received this wonderful paddle for my birthday, when I hold in my hands I’m noticing the light weight. And that day in the water was amazing the effort less for my body, because my otrer paddle was so heavy. I can stay to much time and don’t finish tired! And I can paddle more effective and quickly to take the wave too. Sorry for my English I’m from Argentina. Now I bought the T Handle and it’s so much better for my hand because is little. I am 56 years old, I expect enjoy my supsurfing to many years more with my Surge!!! Thank you Black Project!

  22. Surge Surf Paddle

    otisbradley-May 15, 2023 at 7:22 am

I have been paddle surfing since 2006 – and have evolved from huge long stiff paddles to the Surge. At first I was skeptical of the thin diameter handle and the flexibility – seemed like it would break but after two years – when I go back to an old paddle it’s a dinosaur! The Surge flex really helps – like a pole vaulter – you spring forward and provides a lot of punch to get into – or over – a wave. The small shaft makes for much less fatigue in the hands and I haven’t been able to snap it yet ; )

  23. Love it

    David-May 14, 2023 at 6:51 am

I love this paddle. First thing I noticed is that I can get in more strokes on each side when paddling for a wave… Easier on my shoulders. Great quality. Bag is premium. I have so many friends asking me where I got it

  24. Awesome

    michaelt-May 13, 2023 at 3:56 am

It took a while to find a worthy replacement of the paddle I used of the last 5+ years- strong, light, great stroke. I was hesitant of the Surge’s price tag, but I love this paddle and am going to buy a second one for my beach house!

  25. Mike Myers So. Cal

    dawnpatrol-December 16, 2022 at 2:36 pm

Hey everyone! What can I say that hasn’t already been said in all the other reviews? This is hands down the best SUP surfing paddle on the market. It impressive in all aspects from build quality, engineering and performance. It is hard to believe a smaller blade can move more water but it can! I want to thank Chris for putting forth the effort to advance SUP surfing, it seems that there is not a lot of effort or resources working on the progression of the SUP surfing world. Solid effort, solid product! Cheers!

  26. Why did I wait so long to make this investment?

    Patrick Mumman-August 12, 2022 at 1:15 pm

Recently bought a Surge and I am loving it. Chris was spot on with his spec recommendations and it arrived to the east coast from HI in 2 days! The paddle is super light and I can see how it will reduce shoulder strain and fatigue when I’m out in the surf. The right paddle has the ability to make a mediocre swell day a blast. Get one. Now!

    scoobydoo174-July 20, 2022 at 2:05 pm

Chris got me dialed in for a Surge paddle. I have home my height weight board size and a few days later my new super light paddle arrived. I’ve used it a half dozen times and it out performs all my previous paddles. It is so light, you hardly realize you’re holding anything. The price is worth it.

  28. Surge XL

    gdr1104-July 10, 2022 at 11:53 am

I was fortunate to get a surge XL through the offers section on the website. Unfortunately the waves had been small since it arrived. However I got to test the paddle in anger today. Quite simply the best paddle I’ve ever owned. Light, strong and responsive. It made my 10-year old adjustable paddle look very dated very quickly. Increased wave count. It was daunting splashing the cash but well worth it. The paddle bag that accompanied the board is exquisite. The best designed paddle bag. Top marks all round for a great paddle, paddle bag, communication and delivery. Thank you Chris.

  29. Phenomenal Paddle.

    daniel-June 22, 2022 at 1:48 pm

I’ve only been sup surfing for a year now, and I’m so glad that I made the investment to purchase the Surge paddle. It was definitely more expensive than every other paddle I looked at, but after having it a week now, it was worth every cent. My paddle stroke speed feels like it’s doubled and my wave count has sky rocketed! Do yourself a favour and buy one.

  30. Es otro nivel

Ya puedo hacer largas sesiones de surf sin contracturas. Remada fácil, sin bamboleos. Más control = más potencia. Un remo de 10.

  31. Best SUP SURF paddle hands down

    qmills12-February 16, 2022 at 7:31 am

If you want the best (and trust me you do- it is will worth the extra cash) the Black Project- Surge- TexCarbon paddle is the one! This is my second BP Surge paddle (First one was before the TexCarbon was available- I still have it in great working order after several years of nearly daily use). The textured grip provided by the TexCarbon was my main reason for getting another and I am happy to report it is worth it. Chris and team are great and got this order out super quick and exactly as ordered. The included bag is the nicest SUP paddle bag I’ve ever seen and a great way to protect/travel with your paddle. You will be stoked on this paddle and it will provide years on value.

  32. Help for pain

    callmatt-January 8, 2022 at 6:34 am

I started having bicep tendinitis and shoulder pain after ramping up my paddling frequency last year which took me off the water for a while. To come back I wanted to find a paddle with a smaller blade and that was lighter. Since I was focused on sup surfing and sup foiling I chose this one. So far it has been a great improvement. Super light and allows for fast cadence. The T handle I’m mixed on – it does help to quickly indicate how your paddle face is directed especially after falling, but it isn’t quite as comfortable. I’ll probably try the ergo to compare. Happy with the paddle overall and do recommend it to others – most of whom are impressed by the weight when they feel it.

  33. Killer Paddle

    stollmeyer.mike-December 4, 2021 at 11:52 am

As a SUP surfer of 8 years, I’ve owned many nice paddles. Dealing with some repetitive paddling injuries, I was looking for a forgiving paddle with lots of flex, yet lightweight and responsive. Look no further, this is the best SUP surf paddle on the market IMO.

  34. First Class Surf Paddle

    Cliff Von Langen-October 31, 2021 at 7:22 am

I have been a SUP paddler for 12+ years and have owned many paddles. The Surge is by far the best surf paddle I have used. The blade is very effective, generating power quickly and throughout the stroke, The shaft feels “just right” to me with respect to flex and the texture provides a secure grip and is quite comfortable in my bare hands. I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like the Tahitian grip, which provides a positive indication of blade orientation and a very secure and comfortable handhold. Another surprise is how well it performed over distance when paddling my 14′ race board with another good paddler who was using another Black Project paddle. From the grip to the tip of the blade this paddle is well thought our, practically perfect, and the finish is flawless. Mahalo!

  35. Dope paddle.

    Bryan Stroud-October 29, 2021 at 2:42 am

Great paddle. Light weight. Flashy look if you’re into that. I like the finish. Love the bag. I am going to switch to a palm/ergo handle after trying out the T which just isn’t working for my small hands and long sessions.

  36. Had initial sticker shock but worth every penny

    williamhaggerty-October 22, 2021 at 2:31 am

I’ve been SUP surfing for 9 years and this is by far the best paddle I’ve used. After inquiring online, I spoke with Chris directly to customize the paddle size & options based on my skills, height & weight, board size and surfing goals. I couldn’t be happier. After opening the box, the paddle’s light weight jumped out to me immediately, and the strength of the paddle was evident after my 1st time in the water. After using it throughout the Spring, Summer and Fall for a total of 100+ SUP surf sessions, it’s delivered on expectations I had after seeing social media posts. I 100% definitely recommend and in fact I have already recommended it to my local shop owner and SUP surfing friends in the water. Added bonus: the correct size and lighter weight have helped correct my technique and I haven’t experienced the shoulder soreness I’ve had in years past. Thank you, Chris!

  37. Great Paddle

    James Taylor-August 28, 2021 at 10:46 am

I was hesitant about spending $500 for a paddle but after reading the reviews I decided to make the purchase. I am glad I did, the Surge paddle is sweet! The feel is much different then my other carbon fiber paddles. You can definitely feel the flex and it adds to the amount of time I can spend on the water and I no longer have a sore shoulder!

  38. Surge Texcarbon

    Daniel Berry-July 31, 2021 at 2:00 pm

There are a few pieces of sports equipment that have really “changed the game” for me in terms of user experience and performance: disc brakes on bikes would be a good example. I would put the Surge paddle in this category. It took me three years of surfing SUPs to understand that I shouldn’t just be investing in the right board, but that a quality paddle also makes a huge difference — I credit this insight to this piece of gear. I don’t know enough about hydro-dynamics to really understand how the dihedral blade design and angle specifically works, but I can speak about how it feels from the user perspective. Once this this blade is in the water, it positively “locks in” without wobbling in ways that increase my control during pivot turns and critical takeoff strokes. The blade’s surface area feels well balanced — neither too much nor too little thrust. The shaft and the handle, however, are probably the components that I’ve most appreciated. The Tahitian-style handle is intuitive in letting me know which way the paddle is facing, which is key b/c I’m constantly turning the paddle on longitudinal axis to either paddle (concave side) or stabilize/brace (convex side). The shaft texture feels great on the palm. And the shaft’s FLEXIBILITY is the final key element in the magic sauce. The spring and flex in the shaft, apart from making the paddling motion smoother, acts like a bow or pole vault under tensile force: when it releases, it recoils back into shape and provides extra acceleration forward, which I especially feel on that last power-stroke transitioning from catching the wave to surfing it. Beyond the performance factor, aesthetics are refined and the paddle is featherweight. So glad it’s offered with the paddle bag, which definitely is a must if you’re investing in equipment of this quality and price point.

  39. Surge Paddle

    Gary Hashimoto-July 28, 2021 at 6:03 pm

This is by far the best sup surf paddle for serious sup surfers. The new model I just purchased is much improved over the original version I purchased a couple of years ago. Significantly lighter with better materials i.e. silver tex-carbon shaft, red/black carbon fiber blade and T handle. This paddle is smooth as butter cutting through the water with great acceleration in catching more waves. Moreover, it has saved my shoulders from aches and pains. Highly recommended for the serious sup surfer.

  40. My new Surge

    Greg Waller-June 27, 2021 at 9:56 am

I just purchased a new Surge and I feel it’s just what I was looking for to take my paddling to the next level. It’s very light and powerful for how small it feels and the flex makes it feel soft and quick. I think my shoulders are going to enjoy the new feel.
I used the spec sheet on the black project web site to get all the info I needed to order the new paddle. I should have order one years ago.
I let my wife use it and now she wants one. So I am getting ready to purchase another.

  41. Excellent SUP surf paddle, alleviated elbow pain

    FF-June 26, 2021 at 7:57 pm

Excellent paddle. I bought the Surge because I was having elbow pain and immediately noticed an improvement from the smaller blade size, flex pattern and the nice textured shaft (which makes it easier to grip the paddle). The blade feels great: just the right amount of power, smooth through the water, and no flutter when paddling or bracing. I’m 145 lbs and went with the Medium blade, Medium flex, and 3″ over my height. It was interesting to note that the Surge blade is lower aspect compared to my previous paddle’s blade, so a slightly “shallower” stroke fully immerses the blade. This reinforces the guidance to go with a shorter length if you are transitioning from a higher aspect blade. Another nice surprise: the 8-degree blade angle means that the paddle stays closer to the board when prone paddling trough the surf. Very happy with the Surge, and thanks to Chris and the team for the good advice and helpful content on the web site. Cheers

  42. Hands Down the best paddle out there

    Marc Collins-May 6, 2021 at 9:22 pm

I am thankful for the off season swell on Oahu’s north shore so I didn’t have to wait until next fall to put my new Surge to use in significant surf. It fully exceeded my already high expectations. The paddle is so light it seems to defy Newton’s laws. The consistent texture of the texcarbon provides comfort and a secure grip. The whole thing is like a work of art… even the fine details (I recommend having BlackProject cut it to size and attaching the handle for you… they did a seamless job). Friends and Neighbors who puts their hands on it can tell it is something special. It is truly a pleasure to have this paddle in hand for surf of any kind. Mind blown.

  43. Absolutely The Best Paddle!

    Stefan Harbov-January 22, 2021 at 8:56 pm

I’ve used couple of different paddles and always something didn’t feel right.
I sent a detailed email to Chris explaining what I was having problems with and asked for suggestion on a new paddle from Black Project.
Shortly after, he personally called me on my phone and after I explained my struggles, Chris recommended me to get the Surge is size L for wave riding.
I picked it up the next day and went to try it right away.
What a difference! It felt perfect!
It is Super light, very responsive and quick. Now I’m moving forward much better and I’m catching more waves quicker.
I love the feeling of the shaft, not too stiff but not soft, super quick and responsive! When I’m on a wave I don’t even feel there is a paddle in may hand, it is SO light.
I only regret not buying it sooner. I never thought a paddle can make such a big difference and improve my surfing so much.
Big, Big thank you Chris !
    Highly recommended!

  44. #1 paddle brand

    Katsuya Yamamoto-December 31, 2020 at 10:01 am

Ideal shape and flex performance will lead you to become a better paddler. My questions were answered immediately. I recommend you to treat yourself to a new surf paddle.

  45. Favorite paddle

    Reid-August 20, 2020 at 2:50 pm

Chris helped me dial in the perfect setup. He shortened my preferred length and reduced blade size. Much of my elbow pain is gone, I love this paddle! Solid construction, good for me cause I bottom out occasionally in the shallows. Light as a feather, lighting fast entry/exit from the water makes for quick maneuvering. This thing is a work of art. I recommend this paddle to every SUP dude I know.

  46. Only regret is waiting so long to make the switch!

    Scott Cleveland-July 2, 2020 at 8:44 am

Worked with Chris to get the specs I needed on this paddle. He steered me in right direction – fantastic customer service! Surfed a few times with it and it’s the best paddle I’ve ever used. Similar grab and feel to the hydro coupled with the large blade makes a perfect compliment for my height/weight . Feel much stable and quicker getting into the waves and once on barely notice it’s in your hand it’s so light. Only regret is waiting so long to make the switch! Thanks again Chris for the great product and best customer service out there

  47. Design, Build Quality and Customer Service are World Class.

    dedric_rob-May 21, 2020 at 7:53 pm

I was using well known carbon paddle from another company, which I loved. That was until my Surge Texcarbon arrived on my door step.
Prior to my purchase I had several questions about sizing and shaft flex which Chris answered. I trust the recommendations that he gives 100%. Two hour SUPsurfing session are now pain free, minus the minor contusion. I used to get a little lower back pain if my paddle stroke was out of form, GONE! Tight shoulders which I use to wear as a badge of honor, are a thing of the past. I couldn’t believe how light this paddle feels and how solid the construction is. I was catching waves after adjusting to the weight and the power generated by the blade. Smaller blade more power, how is that possible????? Design, Build Quality and Customer Service are World Class. Chris thanks for the great customer experience. ????????

  49. The perfect surf paddle

Excellent power paddling out, speed to catch waves, and strength for pivoting around the paddle. So light and yet super durable so far.

  50. The “Go to” surf paddle

    lundyfields-May 10, 2020 at 4:30 pm

I have been SUP surfing for 10 years now and have used some other brand name, high quality paddles – then I found the Black Project Surge Texcarbon. This paddle is amazing. It is SO light and strong. I have broken two paddles in large surf so having a strong paddle was important. I am so glad I found the Surge Texcarbon paddle. Chris provides great customer support as well.

  51. Great surf paddle

Now have 3 hydros – original SDS, a 3 piece for travel and a RDS Texcarbon. Liked the RDS so much bought a surge RDS medium as well for the waves. It hasn’t disappointed. Fantastic paddle. Ive been paddling with other top brand surf paddles but this is a step up. Super light swing weight, great feel and drive and its been through some pretty big wipeouts without a mark.

  52. Sick Paddle!

    Mike Staebler-March 31, 2020 at 3:53 am

Incredibly light paddle! This is the second generation paddle i have owned, the precious Surge was a large and moved up to the XL with Texcarbon shaft- truly amazing quality materials. The paddle feels like an extension of your arms being so light and balanced. It is effortless to maneuver and switch from side to side while on a wave! Highly recommend to anyone for SUP surfing

  53. Out of the box, the build quality is obvious, super light, while the slim, slightly textured shaft is solid in the hands.

    Eric Chu-January 20, 2020 at 5:36 am

Happy owner of new SURGE Med Flex/RDS paddle. out of the box, the build quality is obvious- super light while the slim, slightly textured shaft is solid in the hands. fantastic in the water. my strokes are much more consistent with less stress on shoulders, i believe the moderate but noticeable shaft flex combined with the scooping blade design makes it easier to get a solid catch on each stroke. light weight and smaller blade size gives me better, faster strokes with fewer slips and less body strain. and can’t go wrong with textured shaft. only downside is that now i want the hydro for distance racing! great work BP!

  54. Great personal service from Chris and the team.

    Ed Nimmons-January 16, 2020 at 9:09 am

Durability is fantastic. Purchased this after other paddles had snapped or deteriorated quickly and it is bullet proof. Performance also great – as others have said it is surprising how much power you get from what would normally be a smaller blade compared to alternatives. Love the palm handle, very instinctive to know which way the paddle is facing (after wipeout etc). All good! Great personal service from Chris and the team.

  55. Really pleased with durability.

    Ed Nimmons-January 16, 2020 at 9:06 am

First – this is bullet proof. I purchased a Surge after other paddles had snapped/deteriorated quickly. I have had this a few months and it’s like new despite putting through some heavy paces. Really pleased with durability. Performance is also awesome. I was used to larger paddles so I am surprised by how much power I am getting from what would normally be a small paddle for me. During surfing you know intuitively which way round the paddle is due to the distinctive palm grip (after wipeout etc). Other points – light as a feather, looks cool (silver), nice grip on the shaft. Nothing bad to say!

  56. T-Grip handle is spot on for SUP Surfing!

    William Silliman-December 27, 2019 at 1:32 pm

The SURGE paddle performance is AMAZING! Traded in my full Kevlar SUP surfing paddle for the surge…and the difference is noticeable immediately. This paddles catch is SOLID. The TEXCARBON shaft has flex but performs solid in surf. T-Grip handle is spot on for SUP Surfing! I have noticed that my arms & shoulders have no aches/pains after 2-3hr surf sessions…unbelievable…but TRUE!!! The SURGE paddle is the best damn SUP Surf paddle out there…PERIOD!!!

  57. Yes, it’s a bit more expensive than other paddles. It’s worth it!

    Greg Harris-November 17, 2019 at 11:36 am

The deeper I get into sup surfing the more I’ve realized the paddle is so vitally important. As I’ve gotten better at a higher cadence stroke, I’ve can feel that it exponentially puts more fatigue on your body. Getting this paddle, with a little more flex and smaller blade have made it so light and easy. I’m generating the speed I need. The fatigue is far less. I can go longer and more days than ever before. I love the rdm, even though I was very unsure about it at the beginning. It just feels like a natural extension of what I’m doing out there. Yes, it’s a bit more expensive than other paddles. It’s worth it

After deciding to get the Hydro paddle and talking at length with Chris I also went for the Full Upgrade and got the Surge as well. I can honestly say it was almost like getting a new board in how much it changed my sup surfing. Immediately realized a race paddle is not a surf paddle. One “size” does not fit all. Start to finish, they dialed in the paddle to my specific style, board, height and weight. The blade size, shaft and handle are all specific to you. What really blew me away was the change in length Chris suggested. It was a game changer. And its so light! I’ve been using it now for 4 months and it is an incredible paddle. If you sup surf exclusively or want a paddle quiver – get this paddle!

After 3 sessions paddle surfing, I can say the raw functionality, solid feel for such a light paddle, and user friendliness of this paddle has no parallel (in my experience of using other high end paddles for past 8 years). The medium flex texcarbon shaft has a really nice feeling flex pattern when you load it to whip into waves. The catch of 82in blade feels solid in all kinds of scenarios like powering back out through the soup, pivoting into a late drop, and gathering full speed to get in from behind the wave. They obviously spent a lot of time and iteration designing a paddle that’s a true pleasure to surf with, and super user friendly. Thank you Chris and Black Project!

Just got hold of the new BP Surge 77 with all new shaft.Absolute cracker of a paddle and a super helpful and professional crew to deal with.Very happy indeed.

  61. Philippe Alexander Pagan-June 18, 2019 at 2:03 am

Best SUP surfing paddle on the market today.

I could end my review there. But will add that I am now the proud owner of a Surge 82/Medium/Tex/T-Handle.. It is so light that it actually makes a difference in wave count on really long days. The performance and fit and finish are not matched by any SUP paddle company in the world,. I can’t stress enough just what polished and high performance this paddle this is. Worth the investment. Buy it. Don’t think about it….just buy it. The ROI is incredible and the only downside is I will never want to use another paddle again.

I just received my new Surge L87 TEXCARBON with the medium flex shaft last week. It is truly amazing. In addition to being a work of art (quality and graphics), it adds power to my stroke, has a super positive ‘catch’, and provides instant acceleration. My wave count has gone up dramatically. Customer service is phenomenal… Chris responded to my questions immediately, and shipped my paddle same day Overnight. What more could you ask for?

  63. Leslie Cho-May 16, 2019 at 6:32 am

I can’t rave enough about this paddle. SO LIGHT it’s unreal! This has really elevated my SUP surfing to a whole new level–basically I’m getting more paddling power per stroke with a lot less effort. The construction is super high quality, and I love the ergonomic handle–it fits so nicely into the palm of the hand so your paddle automatically faces the right direction without you thinking about it. It’s also sleek and super sexy. I feel like I’m surfing 10x better already. The claims about this paddle correcting your form and alignment and reducing fatigue are 100% true. Customer service was fantastic. Chris is a gem. Thanks!

I went out in some small surf yesterday and tried my new 87 Surge paddle. All I can say is I immediately noticed an unbelievable difference. The flow and the power with this feather light paddle felt amazing. I thought I was on a pretty good paddle before trying BPS, really, it was a clunker in comparison. Also, now I’m excited to go out and try a race paddle soon. They must be amazing as well.

I just got SURGE 82 with medium shaft cut 1inch under my height for 75kg (7’10 and 7’7 about 80/82L). After average twelve sessions, very satisfied. Extremly light in bottom to roller and very confortable even during 3 hours. Thanks Nexpa surfshop(France)

    This paddle is nuts!

I have the 82/medium pro-carbon/T-handle Surge which I’m using for SUP foiling. It’s extremely light, with the right amount of flex! The blade is a little smaller than what I’m used to but it was suggested as to not hurt my shoulders. I feel like I’m actually paddling faster, (actual speed not just cadence) even with the smaller blade. The reduced diameter shaft is incredibly comfy as well. Excellent customer service and quick shipping are icing on the cake. Huge fan of these paddles now and look forward to new releases with the TEXCARBON model.

P.S. can’t stress how light this paddle is, I don’t have much to compare it to besides my Trident surf paddle (an older model) but it’s probably half the weight or less. Woke up this morning and shoulders felt fine even though I paddled 2 1/2 hours yesterday in heavy chop!
