This full carbon paddle shares much of the same DNA as our premier race and surf paddles, but features a more forgiving blade design that’s better suited for a less aggressive and lower cadence paddle stroke.

Great paddle

This is a great paddle. Very light weight. The handle doesn’t twist due to the shaft shape; this is a problem with some other paddles on the market. The paddle shape is forgiving. It’s a great paddle if you share the paddle with others, do different types of paddling, or aren’t ready yet to buy a one-piece paddle. And, the artwork looks great!

I love my 2pc adjustable bp lava paddle. Nice quality. I like the no twist feature. It is super light weight. It feels feather light switching sides. It’s easy on the body for long paddles. No more aches and fatigue. There is a noticeable difference on enjoying longer paddles.

Compared to the paddles I have used so far, I feel much lighter and feel less tired on my arms and shoulders. I mainly use SUP surfing, but it feels like I can grab the water firmly and take off smoothly. I can’t think of anything other than this paddle anymore!

The Lava paddle is light and very responsive. Very smooth entry and power phase. I followed all the sizing recommendations on the website and it was very helpful for getting the correct size paddle. The reserve buoyancy formula was very helpful in choosing a good paddle length. I use this paddle for SUP surfing but I can see how it would be an excellent do all paddle. Very happy with the purchase. Also best paddle bag I have had.

I was really happy with my fixed Ohana that I had previously but then I broke it and needed a new paddle. I decided to upgrade to the Lava and what a noticeable difference! It is lighter and doesn’t seem to flutter as much if my stroke isn’t perfect. I would say the medium stiffness Lava shaft seems a bit softer than the medium on the Ohana but that could be due to the fact that I’m getting a better catch to begin with and able to pull harder. I’m a low-intermediate SUP surfer and it has been a great paddle for me so far.
Crazy light. Less fatigue. Really has improved my sessions on the water.

I love my Lava paddle. Have been using it for a few months now to paddle on lakes and attaining up river. At first, I was a little concerned at the reduced blade size- thinking it would be more difficult to generate enough power. to battle rough conditions. Those concerns quickly faded after taking the Lava out a few times. The lightness of the paddle really makes it easy to maintain a high cadence for longer periods of time. Best of all the Lava has helped avoid the nagging shoulder injuries I was having with my previous paddles. Really happy with the purchase.

I’m 68, paddle flatwater for exercise and in preparation for surf trips. I recently developed worrying upper back/shoulder muscle pain. I just happened to visit BP’s website and read “The Benefits of Smaller, Shorter and Softer SUP Paddles.” I emailed a question and Chris called me back the next day. He helped me think through everything that should go in to choosing the right paddle for my body and my paddling needs and recommended the adjustable Lava, med. blade, and slim shaft for its flex, fit and performance. I ordered it the same day. It arrived in about 3 days and has been everything Chris said it would be. I can feel the differences it makes with each stroke and every session. The paddle is forgiving on my body, but unforgiving in performance. I love it. It has restored my hope and excitement that I can keep doing this for a good while longer. I am looking forward to using it as my surf paddle for a month this winter in Costa Rica. Thank you to both Chris’s for one of the best customer experiences I have ever had. And today, rather than send my daughter my old paddle to go with her new SUP, I ordered her her own Ohana paddle for her birthday. What a difference a paddle makes…

I had accidentally ordered the fixed Lava when intending to order the three-piece version and only realized my error upon delivery. I contacted Chris and he did not hesitate to make an exception on the clearly stated returned policy for fixed paddles being non-returnable. Not only did he make an exception, his company paid for the cost of return. I love the three-piece lava! It is solid and will be my go-to when traveling by air with an inflatable SUP. Chris lived up to his statement under the return policy: “We will work with you to find a suitable solution.” He did and I’m a very happy customer! I’ve already purchased three of Black Project fins and look forward to exploring the finer nuances of different fins under differing conditions.

This Paddle is nice and light weight, yet it has some nice flex on the shaft. The handle is extremely comfortable. This is my favorite paddle yet!!!

A good light paddle makes the paddling experience so much more enjoyable . More strokes and less fatigue . My catch has improved using this paddle .

After having used the Lava for a few months one, I can confirm its description of a paddle performing well in all conditions. Light enough, easy on shoulders and back even on long rides and very efficient. Especially at this price range, I do not think one can find a better alternative. Super satisfied with my choice.

This paddle’s looks and feel are best in class: light, stylish and sturdy. Incredibly efficient and lives up to a variety of racing & surfing uses. Blade angle and “scoops” work to deliver plenty of power for a paddle with a rectangular profile. Will not disappoint.

It’s quite a bit lighter than another carbon fiber/nylon blade that I have. However, it’s much stiffer and powerful. You feel the amount of power you put into it immediately. I was quickly impressed. The blade angle also seems to make all the difference in the world.

It’s much lighter than my previous carbon fiber paddle. I’m in love with my new paddle. I let my friends try it to and now they also want to get one lol I have a red and white SIC board so the color also is a match to my board.

I added the Lava to my paddle quiver after being blown away from my purchase of a Hydro Reflex (I left a separate review on that product page if interested; love that paddle as well). I mainly am using the Lava on my more relaxed days when cruising flat water or in slightly more adverse conditions (including ocean paddling). The Lava, like the Hydro Reflex, is strong, smooth and just a delight to paddle. I would agree it has a slightly more forgiving feel than the Hydro line, especially with the 10 degree offset; but, it is still just as clean on the catch and pulls through to release with ease. I started paddling over 10+ years ago, and I wish I had learned to paddle with something like the Lava. It is a cut way above all the other general all-around paddles … and it is so light, I wonder how I paddled with anything else prior! (I also cannot recommend the Slim shaft option enough for those with smaller hands. Absolute game changer, and is – in my opinion – better than the Werner Small Fit. Thank you to Chris and the Black Project team for offering this option!)

I’ve been paddling for a few years and was looking to move up from recreational paddleboarding. I spent weeks researching and reviewing every paddle manufacturer I could find. I note some still create and some have moved to mass production enterprises. Narrowing the view to the remaining dedicated paddle shapers, Black Project hit more details on my list than any other. I went all in and made the purchase directly from the company and was not disappointed! I was able to get my paddle sized and shipped to me on the East Coast in three days from the date of MY order!!!!!!! I honestly believed they sent me an empty box until I found the paddle inside. Out on the water, this paddle has perfect entry and exit, no more splashing around with the cheap, heavy paddle. The lightweight carbon of the Lava has reduced fatigue and improved performance, perfect flex through the stroke, allowing focus on technique, speed, and real open-water distances. I love this paddle, it looks good, feels good, and compliments my new SIC RS perfectly. Thank you Black Project SUP!

I spent a couple of weeks reading about paddles and deciding I was ready for a nice paddle. I came across many good brands but Black Project stood out from the rest. I like that this company only builds paddles and fins for paddle boards, not produces them as a side line along with many other products. I like that it is a small business, which is important to me especially in these current times. I like that they are in Hawaii, that’s just cool. Thinking about my current paddle, I am just experienced enough to know that it is pretty good. Now, after two days of paddling with my new Lava, I can say my old paddle was good but THIS is what a paddle should be. I spoke directly with Chris, the owner of BP, who personally answered my email within minutes and called me back to discuss his paddles with me. He explained in detail how the paddle should be tailored to one’s size and type of paddling. I was skeptical of some of his recommendations for me and the paddle but this is why we seek out and listen to the professionals, right?. Everything he suggested was perfect. I now understand shaft flex, blade size, shaft diameter, etc, He created the perfect paddle for me and it has made such a difference with comfort, speed, and fatigue. Now, its only been two days…so I guess I’ll just have to paddle again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next, just to test it out (at least that’s what I’m telling my wife).

I have been using my Lava fixed length with T handle for well over a year now and love it.
Its only used for surfing and find the weight, performance, comfort and flex to be just right for me.
I SUP surf at least 3 times a week and it still looks like new. A very strong and light paddle with excellent construction and finish.
As an average surfer I find this paddle has improved my surfing and I reckon I get more waves.
The T handle is a great for smaller hands like mine and helps my keep my grip in critical situations.
The expert advice and support from Black Project are also second to none.

Can a paddle change your life? Well maybe not, but the right one can really make your SUP adventures a lot more enjoyable. I’m a 52yr old, 5’10”, 225 paddler. Although I am an avid paddler and gym nut my shoulders have suffered from years of over use. I previously paddled 100+ in blades with long and very unforgiving carbon shafts. I was skeptical about moving to a completely new set up. I sized down to the 89” blade with the medium flex shaft and took 4 inches out of the length. What a difference!! The Lava paddle is absolutely amazing paddle. It catches cleanly, pulls strong and releases quickly. From the very first few strokes I knew I made the right move. I loved it so much I turned right around and added a hydro for my races. This I the best paddle you will find and the only one you need.

The Apex shafts also feature 30T pre-preg carbon laminates for reduced weight and increased paddling power. Being marginally stiffer than previous models the shafts have been optimized for the full range of paddlers. Available in both 29mm and 26mm straight round options. Your paddling lifestyle plays a big role in shaft choice. If you want the lightest setup for pure performance, a 1-piece fixed shaft is ideal. Need versatility for sharing, changing boards, or evolving technique? A 2-piece adjustable shaft is the most flexible option. Traveling or tight on storage space? Go with a 3-piece travel paddle that fits in your bag without sacrificing performance.

Taller paddlers typically use longer paddles, which naturally flex more due to their length. Shaft diameter has a big impact on comfort. Paddlers with smaller hands often find standard shafts tiring or hard to grip, especially over long sessions. Our Slim Fit shaft options offer a thinner diameter that enhances grip, reduces fatigue, and improves control—especially for youth, smaller paddlers, or women.
Chris’s Advice: Read the Chart, Then Read Your Body
Use our shaft flex chart as your starting point, then personalize your choice. Depending on your height, weight, paddling style, and physical condition, you’ll either choose a stiffer shaft, stay with the recommended option, or select a softer shaft.
If you’re heavier, taller, or prefer powerful, aggressive strokes, consider a stiffer shaft (lower flex number). If you’re lighter, recovering from an injury, or favor longer, relaxed paddling sessions, a shaft with more flex (higher number) will typically be beneficial.
One factor alone might not justify changing from the recommended stiffness unless you’re already at the upper or lower end of a range. However, if two or more factors align, even paddlers in the middle range should consider adjusting. The goal is to find the perfect balance for your paddling comfort and performance.

This table is not designed to be a one-size-fits-all solution, shaft choice will depend on the paddler’s preference, height, and any previous injury. Stiffness recommendations are detailed according to paddle length, if your length crosses over remember that the higher the number = more flex, so if you are at the lower end of the weight range select the softer shaft (higher number) and if you are at the upper end of the range consider the stiffer shaft option (lower number). For your peace of mine, we have a standard 1-year warranty to cover faulty manufacturing. Thanks to hot glue assembly it is possible to replace any damaged parts. Paddle length paddle depends on your height, the type of standup paddling you are doing and the board you use. The correct length will protect your body against injury and maximize your performance. For recreational paddling and inflatables your paddle will be longer while for SUP surfing paddlers use shorter paddles. Use our paddle length guide to determine the correct length. Get your paddle length
Yes, our 1-piece paddles are assembled with hot glue. You can heat up the shaft just below the handle to remove it, and then shorten the shaft. We have a number of guides on our YouTube channel which explain the process. Be sure to use quality extra-strength, high temp, hot glue and not hobby grade glue. This is particularly useful if you move to different board or change focus.

Choosing the right paddle for your experience, budget, and needs
Blade size depends on paddler weight, height, the type of standup paddling you are doing and any prior medical issues. Bigger blades offer more power and are suited to heavier paddlers while smaller paddler will want to select a much smaller blade size. Many paddlers are using the wrong size blade and that is reducing their enjoyment of the sport. Use our blade size guide to determine the correct size for you.

All Black Project paddles have carbon reinforced edges and can withstand a good amount of abuse. The use of protective tape is not needed for general consumer use.
All Athlete Series and Ultimate Series paddles, as well as our 3-piece travel paddles, are supplied complete with a Black Project Paddle Bag unless otherwise stated. Some models are supplied without a bag. For example, the FoilX does not include a paddle bag. Bag inclusion is clearly shown on each product page. Black Project Paddle Bags can also be purchased separately. Some US and international retailers may offer paddles without a bag at an adjusted price. We strongly recommend protecting your paddle with a quality padded bag, ideally a Black Project Paddle Bag.

Paddles are very expensive to design, produce and ship, hence the price which you pay for your Black Project paddle is extremely reasonable. We have cut out a number of business layers and work directly with customers and smaller independent retailers to ensure that markups are reasonable. If we operated a more traditional business structure paddles would be 50-100% more expensive. Standup paddling is a small sport so it is hard to produce enough units to benefit from mass production and gain significant economies of scale.
Yes, our componentized paddle system enables you to swap or replace parts. If you decide that you want to change blade, shaft, or handle, due to preferences or damage, thanks to our hot glue assembly, this is possible and saves you needing to buy a completely new paddle. This is especially important for SUP foiling.
SUP paddles are not one-size-fits-all, and different factors come into play when determining the ideal paddle length. That’s why many of our SUP paddles offer a wide 30cm (12 inches) range of non-twist adjustment. This means you can easily adjust the paddle length to suit your height, paddle board, water conditions, and paddling style.
