Amazing craftsmanship, simply a delight!
russellcar94-May 7, 2025 at 5:05 pm
I’m no expert, just someone who loves the sport and has been regularly paddleboarding recreationally for about 4 years and thought it was finally time to upgrade from lower and mid-tier paddles to a higher end one. It was a tough decision, and I wish I could have tried my top 3 choices before buying, but now that I have this paddle I could not imagine being happier than I am now with the Hydro Tempo X 2 piece.
This thing is just a delight to the senses all around and is built with fantastic craftsmanship. It’s light, yet feels so solid in my hands. The handle is a perfect fit for an easy, firm grip. The texture on the shaft is super helpful. Not only is it a pleasant texture – it has a practical function. So many paddle shafts are finished smooth, which can make it so your hands want to slip around when wet. The texture on this shaft mitigates that problem and also makes it easier to securely grip with less exertion in general, as it provides a natural friction to keep your hand in place. The attention to detail on the paddle blade itself is also cool and fascinating. Everything from the complex geometry to the differing texture of the painted bits. I honestly don’t fully understand how all of the geometry works, but given how well this paddle functions, the creators obviously do, and every little detail has a purpose. You can just tell a lot of care was put into it, and they’re really trying to make something that’s high quality. Holding this paddle alongside a cheaper one is like the difference between holding a kitchen knife hand-forged by a blacksmith and a kitchen knife mass produced and put on a department store shelf. Sure, the cheaper one will get the job done, but the differences are night and day.
In terms of the actual performance on the water, I’d say it has taken the spot as my #1 favorite paddle overall that I’ve ever used. “Best” can be subjective and dependent on the situation so I’ll say this: the intention behind this paddle’s design is for the user to paddle at a high cadence for extended periods, and I’d say it’s able to be used in that way exceptionally well. It’s super light weight and feels like it cuts through the water easily. No fluttering! As I mentioned before, the shaft and handle feel great in my hands; better than any other paddle I’ve ever tried.
The blade size and surface area are actually smaller than the rest of my paddles and the other paddles floating around in my paddling friend group, which made me a little skeptical, but I decided to trust their sizing chart and go with the size recommended for my weight. I was pleasantly surprised when I found out how much power I could get out of it. Not as much as much larger ones specifically meant for power, but somehow it’s comparable to some others that are a bit bigger (and a bit heavier/more fatiguing ). What really shines is the way that I can get a decent amount of power with each stroke, yet it’s so light and effortless to do so. When I get into a good groove I can just keep going and going, and really pick up some speed.
Sizing information and recommendations:
I am a 5’11 male at 155 pounds, and decided to trust their sizing chart which set me at a medium blade size. I think it’s just about right for my needs. When I go out I am usually out on the water for no less than 4 hours, if not closer to 8-10. I can definitely handle a larger paddle, but it does start to get a bit fatiguing after a while and it can sometimes aggravate an old minor rotator cuff injury. With this paddle I can go out pretty much all day without wearing myself out too much or hurting myself. As I mentioned before, don’t assume that the relatively small blade size means it’s weak – it’s not crazy strong, but it does get more power per stroke than you might expect, and the intention is to be paddling at a high cadence. As far as the shaft width is concerned, I have slightly above average hand size and quite strong hands/forearms, so I went with the quest 75 with standard shaft width. It’s perfect for me and I love how thick and solid it feels in my hands, and the flex is just where I like it. However, if you have smaller hands and/or some kind of injury you may want to consider the slim shaft option, as I can totally see how the standard size could get fatiguing on your grip after a while. As for the 2 piece option, it’s a perfect balance for me, as I sometimes adjust the height a little bit depending on what I’m doing, and me and my paddling buddies like to try each others gear so it’s fun being able to give them a chance to try it at their preferred height. The 1 piece is probably a bit more solid, but the 2 piece feels just fine to me, and the adjustment mechanism is super secure. Tightening/loosening the mechanism requires a tiny hex key sort of thing, which came in the bag. I haven’t had to mess with it yet but it seems simple enough. Also… the included paddle bag is excellent quality. I’m honestly astonished that they are just including them complimentary with each paddle.
Overall… it’s great. A joy to use. I could not recommend it more if you’re looking for something to take out on your all day excursions that can keep you out there going faster for longer. It is meant for intermediate to advanced paddlers. However, I would not necessarily say that this is a super beginner unfriendly paddle and that someone newer to the sport would have a bad time with it. It doesn’t seem to crazily punish sloppy technique as far as I can tell, but to really get the most out of it you do need to be able to consistently get a clean catch at a fast, steady pace, and hold the paddle vertically and really drive it in the water. It’ll definitely help you refine your technique if that’s a goal of yours.
Happy paddling!
Game Changer

I was relatively new to SUP racing when I purchased the Tempo X. The difference in weight alone helped my endurance but using this paddle was the first time I really connected to each phase of the stroke. The catch is noticeable and forgiving and I feel connected through the power phase. I’m 5’11, 200lbs, and the Medium paddle has been great for the long distance races. I went with the adjustable because I had not nailed down what length I preferred and wanted something I could tailor to race and casual paddling. Best investment since getting into this sport and on top of that the BP team provides great customer support.
Great Adjustable Paddle, Even When It's Not Just a Spare!
topnotcher-April 18, 2025 at 4:45 am
I originally picked up the Black Project Hydro Tempo X because I wanted an adjustable paddle with a smaller blade than my primary Ke Nalu Mana, mainly to serve as a spare or for specific conditions. However, I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how often I reach for it, even when my Mana is available.
Despite being an adjustable model, the performance is fantastic. I find myself grabbing the Tempo X whenever I feel like using a slightly smaller blade. While not as light as my one piece Mana, it is quite light and feels great. It far exceeds my expectations for an adjustable paddle.
It’s proven to be much more than just a spare. Based on my experiences with the Hydro TempoX, I have since added a Hydro SynergyX to my quiver.
A noticeable step up

Switched to a Lava paddle 18 months ago but started doing longer touring paddles last year so decided it was time for an upgrade.
Decided on the adjustable Tempo X as I need some length adjustment for different boards and heavy swell conditions. What can I say the paddle is amazing and such a pleasure to use, it has shaved a good 30 mins off a 16k paddle and is so easy on the body. Occasionally with the old Lava I could get shoulder and side pain now with the Tempo X, nothing no twinges and less fatigue amazing 😻
I went for the XL as I am 6ft 5 and the increased power over the Lava is noticeable, head winds are so much easier to paddle thru and conditions that used to make me think twice about going distance I now relish as the paddle gives me so much confidence.
The handle is extremely comfortable and has a lot more grip than my last one and the catch is super solid. I can honestly say this is the best thing I have purchased in years Black Project do not disappoint so my advice to the undecided would be to pull the trigger and just buy one you will love it.
The attention to detail and the design of this paddle is second to none, it is expensive but totally worth it you can see and feel where the money is spent.
Unmatched Performance & Versatility
Jakob Unterreiner-April 14, 2025 at 5:14 pm
I spent way too much time—like a year—researching paddles before finally pulling the trigger on this one. I looked at Quickblade and Starboard, but in the end, the Black Project Hydro Tempo X Adjustable Paddle really stood out. The modern tech, the adjustable system, and the free paddle bag really sealed the deal for me.
I went with an adjustable paddle because I couldn’t settle on a single height—I do different types of paddling and plan to add a hard board in the future (right now I’m using a Starboard iSUP). Being able to adjust the length depending on what I’m doing or what board I’m on was a huge plus.
The paddle arrived quickly, and I was really impressed when I took it out of the box. It’s light, feels solid, and has a clean design.
I finally got to take it out last weekend, and it performed even better than I could have imagined. The catch is super forgiving, the scoop shape on the blade adds a nice amount of power with each stroke, and the handle feels great even when wet. I paddled 10 miles after a long winter break and didn’t feel sore like I used to with my old paddle.
I’m 5’9″ and 150 lbs, and Chris suggested the medium blade with the skinny shaft. It’s the perfect fit, and I’m really happy with it. Chris really knows his stuff—his attention to detail shows in every aspect of the paddle.
If you’re on the fence about your next paddle, Black Project is definitely the way to go. You won’t be disappointed with the quality and performance.
Favorite paddle
retobadertscher-July 27, 2024 at 6:52 am
Having already a Ohana and a Lava paddle. But this is my favorite paddle. I enjoy the lightness of it, good catch and a very powerful stroke. I chose an adjustable paddle as I’m riding an inflatable and hard board and like to adjust the length based on board type and conditions (race, recreational). Btw. my wife as well love this paddle.
Category Killer Paddle
Gabriel F Zambrano-July 17, 2024 at 4:11 am
I have owned a number of different paddles over the last decade. The Black Project Hydro Tempo X is a category killer paddle with few, if any, potential rivals. Excellent design, construction and lives up to the hype. There is something to be said for activity specific paddles and owning them based upon the frequency, duration and nature of your training. A huge added plus is the personal attention available to help with sizing and fit on the website and through Customer Service.
Best adjustable paddle
fredylee-July 10, 2024 at 4:52 pm
Got to be one of my family favorite paddle. This is my wife favorite paddle. We enjoy the lightness of it, and the ability to adjust the length. Definitely more powerful than run of the mill generic paddle out there.
Paddling with this is so much different than before, in the best way
Kenneth Allen-July 18, 2023 at 3:34 am
Before buying this paddle from Black Project I was using a 3-piece carbon travel paddle with a much smaller blade. I read all the reviews, talked to paddling friends, and pulled the trigger on this paddle pretty quickly – and I’m so glad I did. It’s comfortable for long paddles and I don’t slip around on the shaft like I did on my previous paddle. It doesn’t slip through the water and feels like it plants better than any other paddle I’ve tried (from comparable companies). Thanks for this amazing product, Black Project!
My first proper race paddle... and I love it!
Gary Zyriek-July 18, 2023 at 2:38 am
I purchased my first race board and needed a paddle that is as high caliber as my board. I use a BP Ohana for recreational paddling, so I was already familiar with the high quality of BP’s products. The TempoX has been a great paddle for my needs. It catches well and is perfect for both short, hard workouts as well as longer, slower days on the water. I am still learning about paddling at a more serious level so I appreciate the convenience of the 2-piece adjustable shaft. Everything about BP paddles is well-thought out; such as the hex shaped shaft interfaces that prevent twisting of the adjustable interfaces. If you’re on the fence about a top-end race paddle, I would suggest the TempoX. You absolutely cannot lose for quality and price!
Fantastic Paddle
lsnewbury13-May 31, 2023 at 8:49 am
I wanted to get my hands on an an adjustable with a larger blade size than I usually use… to play around with…I will tell you I am a better paddler with the smaller blade but wanted a little more power in my stroke for when I’m tooling around on my inflatable…paddling with my 10 year old niece and have to tow her in….and of course to have as an extra paddle for friends. It’s a fantastic addition to my quiver. I will tell you I have this paddle in a one piece as well with a small blade and I use it all the time when I’m out on my race board and have never had shoulder pain while using it. 🙂
Perfect, and allows me to paddle
paul.taheny1-May 15, 2023 at 8:53 pm
Beyond being a super lightweight, stiff, and very stable paddle. I have an elbow injury, 3 other paddles were always quite painful to use. This paddle sincerely allows me to paddle nearly pain free. I’d imagine, it’s due to the stability of the paddle through my stroke, and eliminating fluttering and possible shearing forces. Either way, I’m thankful and couldn’t be happier with it. Tyvm!

Fantastic paddle! The weight and flex of this paddle is perfect! I went on my first 5 mile paddle and noticed an incredible increase in speed. My weekly 10 mile loop ended 25 mins earlier then usual! Thank you for a great product. I’m eyeing the 3 piece for my travel/ inflatable starboard.
Really has improved my race performance

I have a few of these paddles and this version is insane. My speed overall has improved!
Loving this paddle, excellent customer service and fast delivery to the UK
richard.barnette-January 5, 2023 at 6:01 am
I love this paddle, it has made such a difference to my paddling so light yet powerful. On long paddles I occasionally use to suffer with cramp in my hand but not any more as the grip so comfortable. Definitely worth the price! I emailed Chris as was not sure which size paddle to go for who got straight back to me. I went for the adjustable paddle with standard shaft and large blade in the end as on the larger size. Delivery to the UK was less than a week with tracking all the way with Fedex.
Loving it.
fredylee-October 4, 2022 at 6:05 am
I got the Medium Slim adjustable after chatting with Chris. I thought that slim was for smaller frame person only. I am 5’7″ 170 lbs, and I find the slim shaft comfortable. The catch is superb, and I feel that the SUP travel father with every stroke. Really loving Black Project.
Super light, it has transformed by form

An impressive paddle. It really has vastly improved by performance and style.
Great racing upgrade
acosta558-July 22, 2022 at 3:31 am
Super light, great for racing. Anti twist mechanism on the two piece adjustable is the best I’ve used so far. Good for dialing in height while still new to sup racing and still experimenting.
I felt like I had an engine strapped to the board
Bradley Copland-June 19, 2022 at 9:36 am
I can’t really believe how much of a difference this paddle made. I felt like I had an engine strapped to the board. The weight feels like a feather, the catch was so solid and the ease of the stroke was amazing. This is one of those cares where you really do get what you pay for. If you were debating if it’s worth it – the answer is YES!
Excellent service - arrived very quickly to the East Coast
Earnest Porta-May 20, 2022 at 9:50 am
Paddle feels great in the hand and very solid on the catch (I got the large blade). I wanted adjustable to try varied lengths in different conditions and this turned out to be lighter than I expected for a quality adjustable paddle. Excellent service as well; arrived very quickly to the East Coast.
Will 100% be my go to paddle
Paul-May 4, 2022 at 7:11 am
Great paddle so far and great advice from Chris. I chose the medium paddle which seems to be perfect for me, 5ft 10 and 12 stone. My first trip was 16km and I could feel how the hydro shape of the blade keeps the paddle straight, water entry was very smooth. When you exit the blade you do have to make sure you don’t twist it too quickly or the hydro fin shape will catch the water. After 16km I had no aches or pains anywhere and averaged 7.5 kmph. I swapped to my usual paddle to get a comparison and after only another 4km I had shoulder pain although I was going slightly faster as it’s a stiffer and very slightly bigger blade. The adjustable handle does add about 100g in weight but I think it’s definitely worth it in order to change paddle length when needed. Will 100% be my go to paddle.
The Hydro TempoX is every bit the champion
DP36-April 20, 2022 at 1:05 pm
HydroFlow X (Peyton) vs Hydro TempoX (Eli) Today, I received my BP Hydro TempoX, after much anticipation and high expectations. Spoiler alert: I was not disappointed. It (Eli) shares a majority of its traits with its old brother, HydroFlow X (Peyton); think same family tree, newer branch. The key difference (for me) was a slimmer shaft (26.5mm), medium blade, and adjustable (81” max). I paddled with the it (Eli) for an hour; Eli lived up to the hype. The slimmer shaft felt like holding a rèmo, which is an oar for a gondola. This help improve my paddle technique and hand placement, much to my surprise. The Medium Blade provided the same stability (with less surface area) as the HydroFlow (Peyton) Large blade. I felt at ease paddling upwind and downwind. Additionally, my turning (both sweep and a modified cross bow sweep) became easier due to the stability and power of Eli, which allowed me incorporate foot movement in my turning (a new skill for me). Another observation, I did not need to use the max (81”) to paddle effectively, efficiently, because setting at 78” was the perfect, sweet spot. Finally, I liked the adjustable option because I foresee changing lengths as weather dictates. In conclusion, the Hydro TempoX is every bit the champion and has championship DNA as the HydroFlowX. Below are the specs for each—(Peyton) HydroFlow X, Large, Medium 75 shaft with length of 80”/203cm. (Eli) Hydro TempoX Adjustable, Medium, Slim 26.5 mm 81”/205cm (max)
