SURGE – 100% Carbon SUP Surfing Paddle

The lightweight, powerful & responsive SUP paddle for surfers
Black Project paddles, sup paddle, sup surf paddle, paddle for surfing, paddlesurfing, lightest, strongest, stand up paddle

The SURGE Pro Surf SUP Paddle is for paddlers who want to improve their surfing and stay in the water longer. The Surge SUP paddle offers more power, lighter weight and increased maneuverability. Throughout the design process all unnecessary weight was removed making this the lightest SUP surf paddle available. For example; a Surge Pro 82 cut to 70″ (178cm) is only 13.6 ounces (385 grams), at least 50 grams lighter than any other surf paddle. This reduced weight translates into an improved paddling experience while being easier on your body. Thanks to the design and optimized construction the Surge is also one of the strongest SUP paddles you will find and enjoys a near zero failure rate even in extreme Hawaiian surf.

The Surge SUP surfing paddle offers you the quick bursts of speed needed for catching more waves. We added a little more power to the blade to cope with highly oxygenated white water which offers less resistance. On entry the Surge blade is designed to correct poor alignment often associated with fatigue and injury. The proprietary Scooped Dihedral shaping holds the water securely through the power phase of the stroke generating a smooth and controlled power delivery. Lateral blade movement is eliminated and the toe shaping provides an efficient release. The extension of the tapered scoop towards the toe ensures that the paddle remains stable and delivers power even if you fail to get the full blade in the water, which is common if you are scrambling to make it over the set or paddling on a small and unstable SUP surf board. The shallow 8° blade angle promotes an aggressive paddle stroke and slightly shorter overall paddle lengths. We added a slight ridge along the front of the blade, this increases paddle stiffness both vertically and laterally while adding increased strength. We smoothed out all edges to increase safety while surfing, increase strength and reduce board damage.

The Surge SUP surf paddle is available in four blade sizes and a range of shaft options to suit all SUP surfers no matter their size, paddling location or style. The LARGE 87 sq in (568cm²) is designed for larger riders over 80kg. The MEDIUM 82 in² (519 cm²) is suited for riders 64 – 85kg. The SMALL 77 in² (485 cm²) is recommended for riders 50 – 70kg. New for 2018 is the X-Small 72 in² (446cm²) designed for smaller riders and grom paddlers in the 35-60kg range. Note that due to the increase efficiency and power experienced with the Surge paddlers can use smaller sup paddles than before and benefit from a higher cadence stroke. The Surge has become popular with foilers thanks to its on-demand grunt when you need to power up the foil and incredible lightweight during glides. The RDS is preferred by foilers because it is comfortable and easy to hold while navigating the bumps.

The Large (87) blade comes fitted with our Standard Diameter Shaft (SDS) ideal for bigger riders on larger boards, the Medium(82) and Small(77) and the X-Small(72) feature our Reduced Diameter Shaft (RDS) which is optimal for smaller riders and shorter boards. The Surge paddle is available with either a Medium or Flex shaft. Refer to the table below to find the ideal shaft for you based on your weight and needs.

The 26.5mm Reduced Diameter Shaft (RDS) was designed for smaller riders (under 85 kg) and it adds comfort, reduces weight and increases strength. We proudly make our 100% Pro Carbon shafts in the USA, the weight, strength and responsiveness cannot be matched by other brands. Since the launch of these shafts we have a near zero failure rate even in the most challenging of conditions. By working closely with USA based aerospace engineers we were able to increase strength and reduce weight while improving the responsiveness of the flex for efficient energy transfer. Our premium paddles are assembled with hot glue which enables easy adjustment while providing a water tight bond and added shock absorption. All sizes of the Surge are available in 100% Pro Carbon, the 87 is also available in our 100% Carbon 3-piece Travel option. Our 3-piece travel paddle features two of our unique HEX joins for a secure and twist free fit, finally you can have the performance of a performance surf paddle and the connivence of a travel paddle.

Our lightweight 100% carbon surf T handle is fitted to the palm of your hand for comfort, the bright red color will stand out in the surf in case you get separated and the flat front of the handle will instantly ensure the correct orientation. Our Palm handle is also available on request.

SURGE - Blade Sizes

  • LARGE 87 sq in (568 cm2) is suited for riders over 80kg.
  • MEDIUM 82 sq in (519 cm2) recommended for riders 64 – 85 kg.
  • SMALL 77 sq in (485 cm2) is recommended for riders 50 – 70kg.
  • X-SMALL 72 sq in (446cm2) which is designed for smaller and grom riders in the 35 – 60kg range.

Due to the increased power and efficiency of the Surge paddle riders are able to use a slightly smaller blade than previously. Paddlers with a higher cadence will benefit from a smaller blade while those with a slower paddle stroke will benefit from increased power and hence a larger blade. For foiling we recommend a slightly bigger blade than for surfing.

SURGE - Shaft Options

Shaft Options

Pro Carbon – Our Pro Carbon shafts are made in the USA in a tightly controlled aerospace factory which specializes in carbon tubing. This enables us to deliver a shaft which is lighter, stronger and with faster reflexes than otherwise possible.

Shaft Flex Options

Shaft flex is much talked about and something which we have always focussed closely on, by adding a little more flex riders experience less stress on their joints and can paddle for longer. While surfing flex helps increase feel especially when bracing. For bigger, heavier boards riders tend to prefer a stiffer shaft while those paddling smaller surf boards benefit from increased flex. For foiling with slightly longer paddles and quick bursts of speed riders tend to use a slightly stiffer paddle. We have found that our Med shafts are optimal for most riders in a range of conditions, refer to the table below and get in touch to discuss your personal needs and we will help you choose the right options for you.

SURGE - Paddle Length
There is no one answer to a question regarding paddle length. For any given paddler there are a number of variables to consider when sizing your paddle. Below is a table which makes some suggestions based on the type of paddling you do, your height and what you ride. If your board sinks well below the water then consider going smaller, if you have a lot of spare buoyancy in your board then consider a slightly longer paddle. For SUP foiling use a paddle 2 – 3 inches longer (5 – 7.5cm) than normal. Too long and your shoulders will suffer whereas if your paddle is too short your back will feel the pain, get it right and you will feel comfortable over long periods. The use of hot glue enables you to easily shorten your paddle, our recommendation is that you leave your paddle slightly longer and then cut down if required. If you are unsure about what length you need please get in contact and we can discuss.
