SCOOPED DIHEDRAL BLADE TECHNOLOGY (SDBT)
The Surge incorporates our Scooped Dihedral Blade Technology (SDBT) which holds water securely through the power phase, eliminating lateral movement and delivering force in a smooth, efficient manner. The extension of the dihedral ridge towards the toe of the blade keeps it stable and delivering power, even if you don’t get a full paddle stroke. The concave design of the two sides of the dihedral increases power output. The Surge blade is predictable, powerful, and efficient, encouraging the use of smaller sizes.
SURF GRIP HANDLE
The hollow pre-preg carbon Surf Grip (formerly known as the T-handle) is a standout feature of the Surge paddle. With its unique flat front and curved back design, this handle provides direct tactile feedback to the paddler, ensuring precise blade orientation. The compact size of the Surf Grip enhances paddle agility and ensures a secure hold during wipeouts. Constructed with thirteen layers of carbon, this handle is built to withstand the rigors of surfing while maintaining an impressively light weight of only 22 grams (0.78 oz)—making it the lightest paddle handle in our lineup.
APEX CARBON SHAFT
The Apex shafts also feature 30T pre-preg carbon laminates for reduced weight and increased paddling power. Being marginally stiffer than previous models the shafts have been optimized for the full range of paddlers. With the trend towards slightly higher volume SUP surf boards, we wanted to increase power slightly and these new shafts help us achieve this while maintaining our familiar flex, reducing fatigue, and safeguarding against injury – when the surf is good, we want you to make the most of it with long pain free sessions.

SHAFT STIFFNESS
This table is not designed to be a one-size-fits-all solution, shaft choice will depend on the paddler’s preference, height, and any previous injury. The recommended column is suitable for most people. If you are taller than average for your weight, consider a stiffer option and if you are shorter than average for your weight consider a more flexible paddle shaft. SUP PADDLE LENGTH GUIDE FOR SURFING
This table is not designed to be a one-size-fits-all solution, and recommended lengths may vary by approximately 1″ (2.5cm) depending on the paddler’s preference. It’s easier to cut your paddle down than to glue on more shaft (especially with our hot glue construction), so we err on the side of caution by recommending the longer end of the spectrum.

Yes, our Surge paddles are assembled with hot glue, this means that you can easily shorten. This is particularly useful if you move to a lower volume board as your surfing progresses.
Increased flex in the shaft is good for SUP surfing, not too much, but the right amount to enhance your use of the paddle while surfing, too stiff and the paddle tends to catch in the water when you use your paddle to brace or pivot, too soft and you’ll lack power for catching waves. Surf paddles are also shorter and hence the shaft needs to be more flexible because paddles get stiffer at shorter lengths generally. A slightly more flexible shaft will also help to reduce fatigue and protect your body against injury.
Bt far the most popular size of blade is the Medium which is 80.4 in² / 519cm². This is what the majority of our athletes use. Be sure to refer to sizing table to select the right size for your weight.
When ordering via our website the Surge paddle is supplied complete with our Paddle Bag, it is not a free bag and some US and international retailers do sell the paddle without the bag at an adjusted price. We strongly recommend that you protect your investment with a quality padded bag, ideally a Black Project one.
Yes, if your local SUP store is an official Black Project retail partner they will be able to arrange your new paddle. If they are not currently one of our retailers you can either buy online or ask them to get in contact with us. Refer to our Dealer Locator Map to find your closest store.
We ship from our Maui workshop via FedEx 2-Day shipping to all 50 states, we do not charge for this service. We also offer low shipping rates worldwide via FedEx International Economy.

Thanks to our innovative designs, quality manufacturing and attention to detail, our paddles have a very low failure rate. For your peace of mine, we have a standard 1-year warranty to cover faulty manufacturing. Thanks to hot glue assembly it is possible to replace any damaged parts. If you feel that you have an issue which you feel should be covered, please contact us for support.
