SUP PADDLE LENGTH GUIDE FOR FITNESS, TOURING & RECREATIONAL RACING
This table is not designed to be a one-size-fits-all solution, and recommended lengths may vary by approximately +/- 1″ (2.5cm) depending on the paddler’s preference. For example, if you are using a thicker iSUP then a slightly longer paddle can help, conversely, if you are using a board with a recessed deck (or dugout) then a shorter paddle is more comfortable. It’s easier to cut your 1-piece paddle down than to glue on more shaft (especially with our hot glue construction), so we err on the side of caution by recommending the longer end of the spectrum. If you are using an adjustable paddle then you have the freedom to experiment and find what works best for you.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
We have collated some of the most frequently asked questions about SUP racing, touring and fitness paddles, and the Hydro TempoX paddle in specific. If your question is not covered, on this page, in the 5-step guide or in these FAQs, you are encouraged to reach out to us for a personal consultation or support.
Yes! The Hydro TempoX is specifically designed for touring, fitness paddling, and recreational racing, making it an excellent choice for paddlers covering long distances. Its moderate 10° blade angle provides a smooth and efficient stroke, reducing fatigue over extended sessions. The PowerScoop blade design enhances stability and control, while the Advanced Flow Technology (AFT) minimizes turbulence for a more efficient paddling experience. Additionally, the lightweight 24T Pre-Preg Carbon construction ensures comfort without sacrificing performance, making the Hydro TempoX an ideal paddle for endurance-focused paddlers.
Yes! The Hydro TempoX is a versatile paddle designed for fitness paddling, touring, and recreational racing. While it is not a full sprint racing paddle like the Hydro SprintX or world champion distance paddle like the Hydro SynergyX, it offers an excellent balance of efficiency, power, and comfort, making it a great choice for long-distance races, endurance events, and technical courses. Whether you’re racing for fun, touring, or working on your fitness, the Hydro TempoX delivers the performance needed to get, and stay ahead. For competitive racing consider the Hydro SynergyX or Hydro SprintX.
While the Hydro TempoX is designed with performance in mind, its forgiving nature and comfortable design make it accessible for enthusiastic new paddlers aiming to improve their skills. The moderate blade angle and lightweight construction help reduce fatigue, allowing new paddlers to enjoy longer sessions on the water. Also consider the Lava paddle.
By far the most popular size of blade is the Medium which is 78.4 in² / 506cm². Be sure to refer to sizing table to select the right size for your weight.
We built the Hydro TempoX SUP paddle to be easy to use and remain comfortable over long distances. By slightly increasing the flex of the shaft we can greatly reduce fatigue and paddling injury. The XL (29) and Large (29) blades sizes come with our QUEST 65 shaft, which is a little stiffer and ideal for taller and heavier paddlers, while the Medium (29) comes with the QUEST 75 shaft, both the Medium (26) and Small (26) blades use the thinner and more flexible QUEST 85 shaft which is ideal for smaller paddlers and increased comfort.
Yes, the Hydro TempoX is available in four different blade sizes (Small, Medium, Large, XL) and two shaft diameters (26mm Slim and 29mm Standard). This variety allows paddlers to choose a configuration that best suits their size, strength, and paddling style.
Selecting the appropriate blade size depends on factors such as your paddling style, fitness level, and the type of paddling you plan to do. Smaller blades are generally better for higher cadence paddling and reduce strain, making them ideal for long-distance touring and fitness. Larger blades provide more power per stroke, suitable for shorter distances or stronger, taller, and/or heavier paddlers. For detailed guidance, refer to our SUP Paddle Blade Size Guide.
Choosing between the options of 26 or 29 on the Medium is personal preference. Smaller paddlers and/or those with smaller hands tend to enjoy the thinner 26mm grip while bigger paddlers and/or those with bigger hands tend to prefer the 29mm shaft. The 26mm shaft is also a little more flexible.
- Large and XL are only available with the 29mm shaft.
- Medium blade is available in 26mm and 29mm shaft options.
- Small is only available as a 26mm option.
Yes, our 1-piece Hydro TempoX paddle handles are secured with hot glue, this means that you can easily shorten your 1-piece paddle – our YouTube channel has a video which explains the process in detail. Our adjustable paddles have 30cm of adjustment built in with each size optimized for the typical user heights however, if you would like to shorten further, it is possible to remove the clamp, cut down the shaft and replace the clamp, please contact us for support.
The Hydro TempoX paddle is constructed using high-quality 24T pre-preg Toray carbon fiber, which offers a balance of lightweight performance, durability, and responsiveness. This construction ensures that the paddle remains comfortable during long sessions while providing the necessary stiffness for efficient power transfer.
The moderate 10° blade angle of the Hydro TempoX promotes an easier catch, providing a smooth paddle entry and a forgiving feel. This design enhances comfort, especially over longer distances, making it ideal for fitness, touring, and recreational racing.
The proprietary Advanced Flow Technology (AFT) is designed to significantly increase paddle efficiency by reducing fluid turbulence around the blade. This reduction in turbulence eliminates unwanted lateral blade movements, leading to a smoother paddle stroke, reduced fatigue, and faster speeds.
The PowerGrip ergonomic racing handle is designed to keep your hand secure during high-cadence paddling and comfortable during extended sessions. Its wider and flatter back creates a secure feel, reducing hand fatigue and increasing paddling efficiency
The Hydro TempoX is designed for fitness, touring, and recreational racing, offering a balance between performance and comfort. It features a moderate 10° blade angle and a forgiving design for long-distance paddling. Other paddles in the Hydro series, like the Hydro SprintX, are tailored for competitive racing, with designs optimized for maximum power and speed. Choosing the right paddle depends on your specific paddling goals and preferences.
To ensure the longevity of your paddle:
- Rinse it with fresh water after each use, especially after exposure to saltwater.
- Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight when not in use.
- Inspect for any damage regularly and address issues promptly.
- Store the paddle in a cool, dry place, preferably in a paddle bag for added protection.
- For adjustable paddles ensure that the screw on the FUSION clamp is kept tight with the tool provided, but avoid over-tightening.
- For 3-piece paddles, take extra care to wash the HEX joint and keep free from sand, salt, and debris during storage.
Following these steps will help maintain the paddle’s performance and durability over time.
The 3-piece Hydro TempoX paddle is designed for easy transport and storage. When disassembled, the longest section measures under 90cm (35.4”) for the XL size (see below), making it compact enough to fit in most standard travel bags. This design ensures maximum portability for paddlers traveling to races, training camps, or adventure destinations while maintaining the performance and stiffness expected from a high-quality carbon paddle.
XL – Max = 93.0 / 36.61
Large – Max = 88.30 / 34.76
Medium – Max = 87.0 / 34.25
Small – Max = 87.0 / 34.25
