Great Stability in Chop .
ivanhotspur-October 6, 2024 at 8:21 pm
My main training board is a 2019 Allstar (23’5). I’m a strong intermediate paddler and purchased this fin for use on the Allstar on the ocean when there’s a bit of chop .
It has really helped my stability in moving water, allows me to power down and tracks great . When flat I’ll go the ‘Tiger’ but in less than ideal conditions the ‘Ray’ works great .
The Ray V2 .....not what you think!
James Mullen-September 7, 2024 at 3:44 pm
I have come to realize that all things “performance” made out of carbon fiber somehow end up being marketed as being fast. Now, the Ray on the other hand, takes a back seat on being fast when people compare it to the other fins made by Black Project. Just for the record, fins are not fast. None of them. There, I said it! Not fast. You could put the fastest fin in the world on my 2024 Starboard Allstar and it will be slower than the Ray by a country mile. Think I’m wrong? Keep reading. The Ray is marketed as a stability solution that has some shortcomings when it comes to speed, maneuverability and some glide. I was willing to take a gamble because I usually paddle in conditions that most of the other people on this planet would avoid. I place a high priority on stability and comfort and paddling around on a twitchy ultra narrow board just takes the fun out of it for me. It makes me tired, cranky and way too serious. My Allstar is a 2024 14×28 and it came with the Flash+ fin that is supposed to help with stability. I know what you’re thinking, how the hell do you not have enough stability on a 28? Simple, I am genetically gifted at 6’6″ tall and 240 lbs. Let’s just say I could tell I was on the fringe for acceptable human size when I started trying to find gear and paddles. The Ray on the other hand has no height or weight requirements and is a fin that everyone that paddles should own. The first thing I noticed with the Ray primary stability was increased . It eliminated the twitchy feeling on the board. This improvement alone would have been enough as it takes the edge off and adds comfort. The tracking with the fin all the way back in the fin box is super impressive. 15 knot headwind tracking and stability is clearly on another level. In chop and wind I can just paddle with no concern of boat wakes etc. Impressive. Downwind return a little stiff in the tail but, easily managed. I moved the fin to the middle of the fin box and tracking was more on par with Flash + mounted all the way back in the fin box. Sweep stroke turns were better in the center position. Stability in the chop was the same. I have Monday night races that have about 10 buoy turns so I was trying the fin more forward. I have it set now about 1/2 inch from the rear of the fin box and this is my favorite spot so far. Great tracking, stability, and it frees up the tail of board on downwind. Really makes the board fun riding wakes and waves. Foot steering is responsive and pivot turns are good. It is interesting that a half inch makes such a difference. Try different setups! Very versatile fin. Increased performance=fast. The Ray has the dynamics to make all paddlers faster. Comfort and stability are king. The more stable I am the more power I can put down. The more comfortable I am the longer I can perform at a high level. The Ray made me faster, glide longer, turn better, downwind better, ride wakes and waves better. You can do anything with this fin. I started off believing this fin would be a compromise on performance for stability and that was me judging a book by the cover. This fin is no compromise and I can’t think of one downside to having it on my board.
Ray V2 transformed my board!
rmschlem-July 26, 2024 at 11:59 am
I placed the Ray on an older board and it has greatly improved the stability, tracking, and speed of this somewhat tippy, responsive board. I appreciate the added stability the Ray has offered which has allowed me to paddle on through variable conditions with increased confidence, and speed. The fin is also great at shedding aquatic weeds during the summer months. The Ray has made a great board and paddling experience even better. I couldn’t be more pleased. I also appreciate BP’s guidance in selecting the best fin for my equipment and paddling needs.
Who knew a fin would make such a difference
Katie Raymon-June 17, 2024 at 8:14 am
Previously, I had a fin that wasn’t a great fit and I felt so unstable on my Bark 14′ board all the time! I struggled to find a new fin for a while but when I reached out to Black Project and they recommended the Ray, I went for it. I AM SO HAPPY I DID! This fin has not only added the stability I needed but I can feel longer glides and it’s easier to keep my speed. Absolutely love it and 100% worth the price. I had no idea how beneficial a fin could be and now I always wanna be on the water!
Ray 24 is a must when water gets choppy.
slawcheko-July 30, 2023 at 2:16 pm
The Ray 24 is a very good addition to my selection of fins. It is the go-to fin when water conditions get choppy. I also have the Starboard Race 23″ and the FCS Connect 9.0 and if there is anything that prevents me from using the Ray 24 all the time is if it had the tool-less installation option like i have on my FCS II Connect 9.0.
Adds stability for longer outings and looks great!
Kenneth Allen-July 18, 2023 at 3:37 am
I have used this fin on my 26″ wide Flying Fish and on my 22″ wide dugout race FF – it tracks straight with little effort or focus on my own paddle stroke – this is my go-to fin without fail!
Transformed my touring paddled
Philip Chilton-June 30, 2023 at 11:58 pm
So light yet it’s really improved tracking and glide
Stability
jmarcin-May 14, 2023 at 12:52 pm
Quality fin as with any BP product. This is definitely the fin to get if you need extra stability. I use it when conditions are rough. It also helps me practice step back turns without falling off. In flat water it does add glide but I find it to be too much drag and prefer my Tiger.
Best upgrade to my SUP gear
geekdom-May 14, 2023 at 3:07 am
The Ray V2 replaces my Naish Javelin’s stock honeycomb fin. The weight difference is substantial, the honeycomb fin is both smaller and heavier. The impact on my stability and tracking were impressive, using my 24 inch board just feels so much more manageable in larger swells.
Helped with my stability
acosta558-May 13, 2023 at 7:52 am
Like the description says, this is helping me get adjusted to a narrower board. Went from a 26″ wide inflatable to a 22″ wide hardboard. Big jump. The Ray is helping greatly get used to the new board and still have great glide.
Amazing Stability & Tracking
jerclark7-May 10, 2023 at 1:22 pm
I love this fin it was a much-needed upgrade from the stock 9-inch touring fin in my Honu Sorrento I-Sup. A notable increase in stability and even speed over longer distances. Also amazing service from black projects. Thanks so much!
Best Fin For Stability
zb_biological-January 25, 2023 at 2:52 pm
I just started using the Ray and love it for rough days on the bay and choppy days out on the gulf. My 404 LTD is much more stable when using this fin, making it easier to focus on various paddling techniques. Solid and durable as well as it held up through some shallower creek paddling. The case you get is also super nice and can hold multiple fins.
Great Fin, big improvement on V1
Paul-December 22, 2022 at 8:37 pm
Have been using the Ray V1 and after looking at reviews decided to try the V2, so glad I did. It’s easily as stable as the V1 but much faster and seems to track better in the waves. The case you get is superb and overall quality is second to none. If you have a V1 and like it, you’ll love the V2!!
My new stock fin
Carl Delica-December 20, 2022 at 2:25 pm
I started using a black project ray on my 2017 starboard allstar 14×24.5 and replaced the stock fin. It added much needed stability in the open water of the Puget Sound. Most of my paddling is long distance in a straight line, so this fin is perfect for stability. I used it a little bit in Hood River and the stability is great for all the chop and dynamic water.
Daedalus, not.
old_canuck-September 20, 2022 at 7:18 am
Just started fitness supping this year with a 27″ 2017 Starboard Allstar and got pretty comfortable over the summer, so of course, I decided to emulate Icarus and bought a 2022 in 24-1/2″. I was eager to advance on my new wings. Needless to say, my legs melted and I crashed to the sea. With my hard won confidence shattered I went on an internet quest for help and discovered Black Project. With the Ray v2 installed my wild new board has been tamed with a renewed confidence on the horizon.
Miles Better Than Stock Fin
sashadog76-June 15, 2022 at 11:28 am
Bought the Ray v2 to replace my stock Blackfin fin. Using it in the sea and immediately felt a difference. Board tracks better, and doesn’t feel like it slows as much as you swap paddle sides. Fits way better than stock fin with little to no movement when in place. Thanks Chris!!
Stability and tracking is amazing
Hoang Pham-May 17, 2022 at 12:27 pm
After 2 months of using the Ray2 fin on my starboard I am very happy with it. Stability and tracking is amazing. It is a very stable fin compared to the stocked fin. Tracking is excellent, I can get 2x the strokes on one side compared to the stocked fin. I haven’t been able to use it on a downwind run yet, but I’m looking forward to it. Thanks Chris for creating awesome gears 👏.
Dope fin!
Eckomax-April 18, 2022 at 9:54 am
Dope fin! Use it for days in cruising, down-winding, or when the chops a bit high. Glides awesome! Even got a friend one & they love it too. Looks like my arsenal is becoming all black project lately!
The Ray v2 keeps you straight as a train track
johnandsusan1-March 18, 2022 at 1:49 am
Just tried the new Ray and it’s exceptional. I have older BP fins and this new edition allows for excellent tracking. I’m doing 12+ strokes on each side, sometimes more and it’s staying right on line. The glide seems to be great as well. Definitely not feeling a drag or slow down between strokes. I am keeping about a 50 spm count and the speed stays up throughout the stroke and even when changing sides. The stability in light wind chop also seems better than the previous models. I haven’t been in anything super choppy, but I have to believe it will handle that as well. A must add for the quiver!
Great Of All Time (GOAT) Fin
Dennis P.-March 13, 2022 at 8:08 am
Finally, I received Ray v2; it was worth the wait. I swapped out my older version of the Maliko fin with this fin and experienced immediate improvement with stability and tracking with my 12’6” Pau Hana Malibu Tour. I put it through its paces from downwind, upwind, and cross currents, river swells. Throughout it all, my board remained stable and tracked exceptionally. During the cross currents and upwind, I was able to track straight by paddling the opposite side of current and choking up on the paddle to fight the strong upwind. Never did I experience a lack of stability or tracking; surprisingly, my turning became easier, which is an added bonus. In conclusion, this is the Greatest Of All Time (G.O.A.T) fin in my humble opinion.
Fast in Japan!
Robert Reed-November 10, 2021 at 6:33 pm
I had used an older (borrowed) Maliko model Black Project fin on my Bark 12.6 board and really liked the stability. So, I contacted Chris who recommended the correctly fitting Ray V2. Yesterday I tested it in a choppy swell and could not be more happy. The Ray is much lighter and wider than the Ray, providing greater stability. The light weight makes my CA Bark model even faster! Thank you for the great support and guidance .
If There Is A "Must Have" Fin, This Is It!
markhodges22-October 28, 2021 at 3:52 am
This fin is a product that completely performs as advertised. It is both fast and stable, a rare combination It is like adding 2 to 3″ to the width of the board in stability improvement, with no reduction in straightline speed. As the weather, wind, and chop increase the fin really shines with progressively better manners. The fin adds to my confidence. Additionally, the fin is tough and durable. It never comes off my board!
THE BEST FINS
G. Alejandro Milla P.-October 23, 2021 at 7:57 am
I have 3 fins, Ray, Tyger and Mailiko.
The Tyger is great and fast, I use it on a SIC Atlantis 14×26 Board and it is very enjoyable and when I do Downwind, I use the Ray and the Maliko, is an experience.
today my best fins, highly recommended.
Chaotic water solution
James Nickerson-October 18, 2021 at 4:39 am
When I take my 14 x 22 Starboard Sprint to a flatwater race that turns into a rough water race, switching to the Ray gives me the added stability I need to paddle hard. While I can’t always travel with a board for every situation, I can easily pack my quiver of Black Project fins and have the confidence to handle whatever comes up.
Thx Chris and Team
Ray…the right fin when I needed it
jeffrey-October 17, 2021 at 7:28 pm
When I first started on my new 24.5 wide board in rough seas, I was constantly falling in. I spoke with Chris and recommended the Ray fin. It changed everything. Yes I still fell in now and then, but it gave me more confidence to negotiate cross waves and confused seas. In calmer conditions, it helps to extend the boards glide off each stroke. Great fin!

Cuts through the water
KAREN REDMOND-October 17, 2021 at 10:36 am
This fin was great for my board that has a displacement hull, it allowed me to remain a little more upright, while cutting through the water for speed and distance.
My most used fin
Robert Cowan-September 26, 2021 at 8:30 pm
Been using my Ray fin for almost a year, and its the fin I keep coming back to. I use it for flat water racing and training and also downwinding. The fin tracks really well enabling me to dig deep on my power side, while provide good control on my weaker side (where tracking is often an issue). The depth of fin provide really good stability in chop, but glides really well. I use the fin also in down winding , especially to provide stability in my narrower less stable my boards, while Im getting used to them.
Ray
Fuyuki Tsumagari-August 30, 2021 at 1:37 pm
I received this new Ray the other day and tried it out right away. Anyway, the stability is different compared to other fins. And the glide with each stroke is really good. It’s a very good fin.
Stability & Control
Ana Velez-August 15, 2021 at 2:58 am
I bought a High end touring paddleboard at the end of last year, but while paddling, my board kept going sideways. A friend of mine recommended this fin, and it was just what I needed—fantastic tracking and stability. I’ve been using it for a couple of months now, and I haven’t returned to my other fins. Thank you so much for an amazing product
The Ray was just what I needed
Mike Sorth-August 1, 2021 at 3:24 pm
Put a Ray on my new Starboard Sprint. Tracks straighter than ever and adds a little stability to the twitchy board. Love it!
Stable, Lift and Speed
Ionut Dumitrescu-April 10, 2021 at 8:08 pm
Hi all! 2-3 months back I said is time to upgrade my SB Sprint and Allstar and decided to buy some performance fins – Ray, Maliko and Sonic. Used them many times on both Sprint /Allstar and I can say is worth the investment – Ray is super stable (good in choppy water) and has super tracking & glide, felt that from the very first moment when I shift from std fin, gives you good amount of lift, track and then just glides, best distance per stroke in my case. Sonic is more towards advanced, not so stable, but super fast in flat water on my Sprint, good for training and for sure good for flat racing – top speed with Sonic during my first trials with the 3 fins. Maliko I use the most now, I find it in between them and is good for my level now, in choppy, not to rough water for 12 to 14 km sessions. Will soon add the Tiger in my collection to have the full range. Thanks, BlackProject team for fast & safe delivery! Ionut
Ray Fin

I received my new fin 3 days ago and took it out twice. Off the bat, I noticed stability, control, and speed compared to my stock fin. I wish I knew about this fin a long Instant impact on stability and control. Great tracking with zero perceived drag. So smart. Wish I had ordered long ago! Love Black Project. So want a new paddle now too. Great experience all around time ago! Great experience all around from customer service to the performance of my new fin. I’m a huge fan of Black Project!
Exceeded expecations!
David McMillan-March 8, 2021 at 12:09 pm
It took a lot to bite the bullet and spend this much on a fin but it has been worth every penny so far. Great quality, nicely packaged, fast delivery and oh yeah – the most important part – it works great! I wanted something to add some stability to my Starboard Airline and this was just the ticket. Now looking for my next addition to the quiver.
Nice Fin
Thomasz-January 6, 2021 at 8:34 am
Excellent craftsmanship. The performance in wind and chop (15-20 knots) and snow with -5 C* was great. For sure this fin works great!
Fast and Stable
James-December 28, 2020 at 9:36 pm
As the product description alludes to, it’s the perfect fin for those wanting top-notch performance and forgiveness. I recently purchased a 14’x25” Flying Fish Freedom and the transition to a top-tier race board from a 10’6”x31” cruiser was a bit of a learning curve to say the least. The RAY was instrumental in that transition. It’s the perfect blend of speed, responsiveness, and stability. It pairs perfectly with my Lava!
Great stable fin
Paul Davidson-December 12, 2020 at 4:34 pm
Now have a full range of BP fins ranging from the sonic to the Ray. This is a great addition and adds some great stability for those cross wind messy days. Still a very fast fin and faster than other fins I’ve had with similar surface areas.
A great all around fin
Tracey-October 25, 2020 at 11:10 am
Very nice carbon fin. I can’t really tell the difference between this one and my previous. I have a pretty narrow race board and this helps with my board stability. Black project is definitely among the best brands for SUP.
Excellent Fin Upgrade for Non-Racer
cmh.103146-October 13, 2020 at 9:42 am
After upgrading my paddle quiver with a Hyrdo Reflex and a Lava, I started to look at doing something similar with my fin set-up (I previously had an FCS Touring fin, which was heavy and didn’t do much in the way of performance). At minimum, I wanted something lighter. And although I am not a racer, I am an experienced fitness paddler that likes to go for longer workout paddles in varied conditions – calm, wind, chop, boat wake, etc. – in both flat water and ocean. The Ray was the absolute right choice for me as it is significantly lighter than the fins that came with my boards and the FCS Touring fin. Of note is that I do not own a race board and have a mixture of more of the recreational shape boards ranging from 10’2″ to 10’10”. This fin works really well to give those boards more touring capability and stability, so you don’t have to have a race board to benefit from this kind of fin. They work for everyone. Another fantastic addition of Black Project gear to my set-up(s). Quality and craftsmanship is top drawer. And it literally arrives on my doorstep in 2 days’ time. My great thanks to Chris and the BP team for continuing to innovate and develop such great products.
New Ray Fin
jeffrey-October 6, 2020 at 9:42 am
I recently switched to a SIC 14′ RS 24.5 board with a SIC Weedless fin and like to do fast long distance paddles in Puget Sound, but the board with the Weedless fin means I spend a fair amount of time in the water in confused seas…8 falls in 11 mi gets tiresome! So I switched to the Ray fin to add stability and could not be happier. I did a nearly 10 mi paddle last night with no falls. Yes the water was less confused, but even where I encountered big boat waves, cross winds and cross seas/currents, I never felt like I was too tippy. The Ray is the missing piece I needed!
Outstanding addition to my 14 X 25" dugout
markhodges22-September 4, 2020 at 12:03 pm
Outstanding addition to my 14 X 25″ dugout SUP to increase stability and improve the overall handling. The board was especially improved in its ability to track reliably against a crossing wind. I was pleased that his large and tall (but quite light) fin actually was slightly faster and still allow predictable sharp turning. It added to my confidence, and increased my fun factor. It was a great purchase and addition.
Outstanding Stable Fin!
Jim Emery-June 22, 2020 at 11:58 am
Being relatively new to paddling I reached out to Chris and he was incredibly helpful and willing to talk about fins and paddles. I opted for the Ray after talking with him about my skills and board choice. While a somewhat larger fin, the Ray is still very light and adds great stability and tracking to my new board. I believe it gives me the added stability and performance I need as my skills and fitness develop!
The Longboard/Surf Base Ray solidified my Red Paddle race board!
Clare Hirai-May 14, 2020 at 5:18 pm
Red Elite 14×25 owner here. Like others before me, I put my hopes in the Ray to improve my inflatable race board’s stability, and some enhanced tracking would of course be most welcome. Let me say that the Ray more than delivered. The board’s side-to-side chatter–part of the deal for any narrow inflatable–has quieted down, and thanks to the strong tracking I am getting more propulsion with every stroke. Be sure to choose the Longboard/Surf base option for Red Elite. Mahalo to Chris for making sure I got the right match!!
My Ultra Reliable Super Stable Ray
Michael Klos-May 12, 2020 at 10:40 pm
This Ray fin is super cool, in choppy cross onshore big swell conditions I can keep my stability and tracking on a thin 2019 starboard allstar 14′ x 24.5″ and I am ‘heavy’ at 6’3″ and 200lbs…. 🙂
I love my Ray!
DENNIS POREMSKI-May 9, 2020 at 3:11 am
Instant impact on stability and control. Great tracking with zero perceived drag. So smart. Wish I had ordered long ago! Love Black Project. So want a new paddle now too. Great experience all around.
What a game changer regarding stability.

Been paddling a 24” x14’ rogue for about 3 years been unstable with the factory fin just put on the Ray what a game changer regarding stability I truly look forward to paddling the rogue know tracks straight as a arrow
The fin greatly improves stability and tracking.
Christoph-November 23, 2019 at 6:59 am
Super fast shipping as usual, thank you very much Chris. The quality of the fin is amazing, super lightweight and durable.
I use the Ray fin on my 14×21,5 board when it gets choppy. The fin greatly improves stability and tracking. Awesome product!
I’m completely overwhelmed with the performance of the Ray on my board.
Carlos Rego-October 23, 2019 at 4:10 am
I’m completely overwhelmed with the performance of the Ray on my board.
I was aware that a good Fin can make a difference on the water but I didn’t knew that you could basically fully upgrade a board with just a Ray fin. This is what I felt.
With the Ray I was able to bring the performance o my inflatable race board to a level that I thought it was not possible.
Front bumps, side bumps, cross bumps, Strong side currents, front currents… it didn’t matter because my board was able to handle those challenges in such a way that it almost felt like I was riding a rigid race board.
At a time I had to handle a bumpy strong side current for one Kilometer and I was able to keep my speed and track with no hassle.
I never felt so confident on the water with my board as I did with a Ray.
Kudos to the Black Project team for creating such an amazing product.
Super fast shipping
Scott Brady-July 25, 2019 at 5:15 am
It’s an awesome fin, super fast shipping, couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Cant wait to get it on my board.

Since adding the Ray, my board is tracking straighter with increased stability. In a race last weekend I faced the most chop I have ever experienced and stayed upright.
