SUP Paddle For Racing, Touring & Fitness Complete With Paddle Bag

Hydro FlowX

( 102 )

$625.00

Completely reimagined design, a paddle unlike any other.

The proprietary Advanced Flow Technology (AFT) is designed to significantly increase paddle efficiency and smoothness by reducing turbulence and unwanted blade movements. The Deep Power Scoop (DPS) with dihedral edges delivers power in a controlled manner and works in harmony with our the AFT to create a first-of-its-kind paddling experience.

Our Fastest Ever Paddle – While individual results will vary and speed is just one aspect to consider, our testing has shown the Hydro FlowX will increase your average speed. When putting in a similar effort, paddlers can expect a 3-5% improvement in speed and lap times or paddle the same speed with less effort (when compared to the original Hydro, which is already faster than most race paddles).

Reduced Fatigue – The combination of flow technology and deep scoop produces a fluid stroke which reduces energy usage while increasing forward thrust. The outcome is significantly less paddler fatigue––enabling you to paddle longer and faster than ever before.

4% Lighter -To reduce overall weight, we reworked our layups and introduced 30-ton carbon – a strong but lightweight carbon that’s 25% lighter than our previous material. The resulting paddle is approximately 4% lighter than an equivalent model of the original Hydro. Weighing from just 345 grams (12.1 oz), paddlers can maintain a higher cadence for a longer period of time.

Even Stronger – The Hydro FlowX’s redesigned blade offers massive structural strength. This gave us the dual benefit of being able to optimize the use of carbon in certain areas, while still achieving an overall strength enhancement.

All Hydro FlowX paddles come complete with our Paddle Bag ($125 value).

  1. Flow X

    John Moore-September 23, 2023 at 4:49 am

Only ordered the paddle Monday pm & it arrived Thursday am. That’s unbelievable!!
I took it out this morning, to do some zone training. As soon as it entered the water, I thought to myself, this paddles different. I often struggle to get a clean catch every time, but this entered so cleanly, with no splashing. It felt effortless. I’m glad I took the chance & advice from friends.

  2. My Favorite Paddle

    justinelliotmeyers-August 7, 2023 at 8:38 am

    Fast. Fun. Frick’n light.

I am a paddle snob. Have like ten. This is my favorite paddle by far. Borrowed it to my 74 year old neighbor and she loved it.

  3. Game Changer!

    webmoss-June 12, 2023 at 8:01 am

I’m definitely not a professional paddler or pro athlete but I do paddle board a few times a week. Usually a couple times a week as a workout, paddling hard to get in 8-10 miles and then a more recreational paddle with a group usually for about 6 miles. I paddle calm creeks and choppy rivers. I like to participate in races up to 10 miles. The HydroFlow X has made an incredible difference over my older 2 piece carbon fiber paddle. I do not get the shoulder fatigue from the weight of the paddle. The grip is comfortable and my hand feels secure. Aside from the amazing paddle, the customer service you get with Black Project is phenomenal. I e-mailed Chris several times with questions before I made my final decision and purchase. He was always prompt, friendly and helpful in his response. I’m in Virginia and received my custom paddle within a week. It was carefully packaged and shipped. Yes. Black Project paddles cost more than some others but it is money well spent. Trust me you will not regret purchasing one.
PS: several ladies in my group now have a BP paddle because as soon as you try one you want your own!

  4. Wow.

    falconry4490-May 28, 2023 at 4:22 am

I was immediately shocked by the high quality and design. Pictures don’t do this paddle justice. I am very happy with this purchase and can feel the quality when paddling. Game changer for sure. You won’t regret it!

  5. EL MEJOR REMO

    artrax2004-May 19, 2023 at 10:26 pm

Como siempre, sorprende por sus cualidades a la hora de remar, ligero, cómodo y con un servicio de venta que marca diferencias.
Todos mis remos son de esta marca por sus materiales y por la innovación constante.

  6. Hydro Flow X

    Simon Ahmed-May 16, 2023 at 9:57 pm

Upgraded from my BP Lava which I had for 3yrs and loved, to a Hydro Flow X. Absolutely blown away by the paddle and service from Chris and his team. The unit arrived in the UK within 7 days of placing the order. The paddle has to be the best looking paddle on the market and the performance is second to none. It’s gonna be a great summer on the water! Can’t recommend BP and their gear enough.

  7. A Very Rewarding Experience

    Calvin Yung-May 16, 2023 at 7:56 am

My first BP paddle was a 2021 Hydro Reflex – still a fantastic paddle. I had tested a FlowX later that summer and was blown away how solid the catch felt inspiring confidence at the press. That connection continually is rewarding each time I use the FlowX. After one full race season using the FlowX, my previous BP paddle now acts as a backup or whenever a friend asks to borrow as the FlowX is my go-to paddle any time I’m out on water or racing.

  8. Best Paddle Around

    datacrunch-May 16, 2023 at 4:40 am

The Hydro Flow X is by far the best paddle. I used to get sore from paddling and not anymore. I thought it was a sales gimmick, but it’s true. These are the only paddles I buy now.

  9. Hydro FlowX paddle

    captbarn-May 15, 2023 at 12:26 pm

One of the best paddles I have owned. I have used the Hydro FlowX on 40 mile paddles, 3.5 mile sprints, and not felt fatigued in my arms. The handle of the Hydro FlowX is definitely a up grade from over paddles as well, just fits better in the palm of my hand. One of the other things I like about the Hydro FlowX is the texture of the shaft. When switching from left to right, the grip on the shaft give me total control. It is just awesome feeling!

  10. La migliore pagaia possibile

    frabiker-May 15, 2023 at 7:40 am

Con una buona pagaia cambia tutto, con questa ancora di piú perché centra tutti gli obiettivi, leggereza, ergonomia, rigiditá. Non potrei piú usare una pagaia meno performante di cosí. Continuante cosí ottimo lavoro!

  11. Paddle Quality Matters

    ashleyjensen925-May 14, 2023 at 7:25 am

I went from a middle priced paddle to this one, and it absolutely was worth it. This is so light, moves so smooth. I could never go back!

  12. Top SUP paddle that comes at a price

    asteppy-May 14, 2023 at 5:29 am

The paddle is very light, and of high quality. Comes with a nice paddle bag, very comfy and spacious, suitable for 2 paddles and some other stuff. The blade is very “grippy” (I have Medium-sized one) and stays well planted at the loaded phase, provided it’s loaded well and deep enough. The patented magic seems to work by providing some extra stiffness at the “neck” of the blade, where in other paddles the blade joins the shaft – it’s very stiff with the HydroFlowX, so all the flexing happens further up. The shaft (I have a standard 29mm Medium stiffness one) initially feels quite flexy, but that has a limit, and it does not feel “noodly”, just taking some of the peak load off your shoulder joints. Overall, top paddle for the corresponding price, in this case you get what you pay for it.

  13. Incredible paddle

    andrewnash2487-May 14, 2023 at 3:18 am

I was looking to increase my speed and stamina and this paddle did not disappoint. As a beginner looking to step up to the next level the Hydro FlowX is the paddle I will be using for the foreseeable future. Build quality and looks are superb also. Very happy with the purchase!

  14. Designed And Built By Paddlers For Paddlers

    Thomas Reil-May 12, 2023 at 9:56 pm

This is my second Hydro while I own a couple of bp fins as well. The build quality and designs are top notch and the product support is amazing.

  15. Great paddle

    mfbt00-May 12, 2023 at 8:24 pm

Really improved my average pace, very easy on the body, smooth exit, perfect shaft rigidity.

  16. Exactly the right paddle

    adrian.cahenzli-May 1, 2023 at 9:52 pm

Having already purchased the HydroFlowX in L, I was now allowed to purchase an L as well. The guidance of the paddle is ingenious due to the special design of this paddle. It helps immensely, especially over longer distances. I can only recommend the paddles of the FlowX series.

  17. Hydro 75 slim med blade ♥️

    Allecia Norton-April 9, 2023 at 4:05 am

I very recently purchased the hydro flow med 75 slim shaft. For me this has been a game changer. I am amazed at the immediate improvements with my stroke. As light flexible and forgiving ing as the hydro is is does not lack in power. I am able to get a continuous rhythm to my paddling that is almost effortless.
I feel the need to point out the genius design of the paddle bag that comes it the hydro. It holds two paddles has places for fins great straps pockets and more. Like everything else I have purchased from BP the attention to detail and the thought that has gone into making Bp products user friendly is next level. Not to mention how amazingly helpful Chris is. I honestly don’t have enough great things to say about Black Project as a whole.

  18. Function drives form

    vinndzl-April 7, 2023 at 11:28 pm

This is my 3rd BP paddle. I’ve used it half a dozen times now, comparing it with the original Hydro, which I’ve been using the last 2 years. The last session was when the improvements really became clear to me. Out in multi-directional choppy conditions, the new FlowX design gave me a noticably cleaner catch and better power delivery than any other paddle I have. That small improvement made what is normally a challenging session a more much enjoyable time, with the FlowX feeling much more locked in place in the messy stuff. One less thing to think about. On the flat water, the blade feels slightly more powerful than the previous model’s blade of the same size. If my technique is right, I feel almost nothing. Nothing on the catch, no flutter on the power phase, no sore body after a 10km training session. The only (satisfying) feeling is the flex as the leverage on the shaft is released. I’ll still be using my old Hydro for training on the flat water to keep my technique in check, but this is the go-to blade for the open water and racing now. Great job Chris and team.

  19. Perfect paddle ;-)

    adrian.cahenzli-March 23, 2023 at 9:50 pm

I bought the XL to use this mainly for sprints but also for shorter LD races. I appreciate very much the super guidance of the paddle which is very easy with the Hydro. The power transmission is top. I feel very comfortable with this paddle and can only recommend it.

  20. Un tel changement

    STEPHANE RABOU-March 2, 2023 at 10:53 am

  21. My default paddle

    Carl Delica-December 20, 2022 at 2:28 pm

I used a blackfish salish for about a year before buying this paddle, and this paddle definitely has more power to it than that paddle. I like to use this paddle for races of all lengths, short, medium and long. I may save the blackfish for ultra long events, but this paddle is great for racing and downwinding when you need bursts of power.

  22. Cambia tutto

    frabiker-December 8, 2022 at 11:12 am

Sono molto soddisfatto di questa pagaia. L’esperienza è migliore di quello che mi aspettavo. Non si può tornare indietro dopo averla provata.

  23. Awesome Paddle

    b265lynn-September 15, 2022 at 5:41 am

I purchased the Hydro Tempox paddle a few months ago and absolutely LOVE IT!. Working with Chris to find the perfect paddle for me was a pleasure. I would highly recommend this paddle. Thank you!!

  24. Upgrade from old Hydro Tex

    jmarcin-September 15, 2022 at 4:46 am

Decided to use the FlowX for the past few months before I left a review. I had been using the last generation Hydro Texacarbon in a medium (85) blade and standard shaft. I love this paddle but it has always been a little punishing on my body on the rough stuff. Chris suggested I try the FlowX in Medium Slim. At first I wasn’t sure I noticed an improvement other than everything feeling different (new grip, shaft, smaller blade) but going back to my old Hydro I notice these slight improvements. I never had a lot of turbulence with the old hydro but with the new design I can see that I had more than I thought! The new design helps mitigate and allows me to get as much power from the slightly smaller blade. It’s a very comfortable paddle! I wish there was a tapered shaft option.

  25. The only paddle I reach for!

    kathleen.sapp-September 14, 2022 at 10:08 am

This is a long overdue review for the Hydro Flow X paddle I purchased last summer. With nowhere to test or even look at a decent paddle within hours drive of where I live, mid-pandemic, and doing a lot of distance training, the process of choosing a new paddle seemed pretty daunting. Chris was absolutely wonderful to work with and got me hooked up with exactly what I needed. I thought I might use this paddle more for distance/training/race events and use others for more casual paddles, but I simply reach for it every single time. It has definitely made a difference with injury prevention and improving my stroke. Highly highly recommend, the product and the customer service.

  26. Amazing Paddle

    Susan Sharko-September 12, 2022 at 1:10 pm

I love my Hydro Flow X. It works great for sprints and longer distances and helped me to improve my times. I highly recommend it.

  27. Hydro Flow X a perfect SUP paddle

    Mitchell Lucas-August 28, 2022 at 7:07 am

Hi there, I was about to buy a top end paddle from another company and I was handed this paddle at a race and could not believe how light it was. I contacted Chris who was super helpful and while I was about to buy an 82 because the 88 gave me shoulder pain. Chris guided me to a large 88 with a medium 75 flex shaft. It arrived and within 5 paddle strokes I knew it was perfect for me. No shoulder pain, the shaft flexes and I get a catch that is fantastic, my speeds increased and ZERO flutter or cavitation, simply fantastic. The customer service is 5-stars as is the product itself. Thank you Chris and the team at Blackproject, much mahalo!

  28. From beginner to 28 miles trips

    Clement MARX-August 23, 2022 at 2:40 am

My wife and I started paddling in June 2021 and took a few classes before we became a full member of my local SUP club. I kept seeing other members with black projects paddles and kept thinking “you must have several years of training before having any use for one of these experienced pro paddles”. I felt it was like getting carbon racing shoes when you run a 10k in 2 hours… I shared this feeling with other members who convincing me it would already make a different VS the basic aluminium and plastic I was using from the club. I waited a bit, discussed with Chris over email about what he thought would be the best for my wife and I. When a good opportunity came as Paddle Specials we both got our HydroFlowX and again, Chris was very helpful to have us get the most suitable shaft and size.
After my first use I thought “meh, this is not a big change VS a regular one, why did I spend so much on this”. It’s only after a few days I realised that I had no sore shoulders, and most importantly able to keep a steady pace that I would enjoy while breathing properly. I swim and run too and having this pace + breathing in place was very important to me. This first use was about 6 months after starting paddling. Ever since I feel like this paddle completely sustained my improvement in my paddling. We recently did our first race and both finished 4th in our age categories, and have been doing up to 28 miles (upwind !) trips.
I can’t wait to get better and I know this paddle can help me growing more (I just need to cut it a little bit :)). Thank you !

  29. The Paddle I didn't know I needed

    cwong430-August 22, 2022 at 9:59 am

I was perfectly satisfied with the paddle I’ve had for eight years but I was shopping for a paddle for my wife. After talking to Chris, I was convinced that I needed to upgrade, and I’m extremely happy I did. The Hydroflow-X is even lighter than my old paddle and I’ve increased my tempo from ~40 spm to ~50. I finished first in my age group in a local race, and came in 3rd overall. I made a PR in a mile, cutting over a minute off. The texture of the shaft is an often overlooked but important feature!

  30. Huge upgrade over LAVA

    Alec Cho-August 1, 2022 at 7:38 pm

I’ve had a LAVA paddle for about a year which has been a great paddle. However, found myself fighting the wind hard at my local shore (about 7 to 12 MPH wind). The Hydroflow X changed my experience completely. The powerful catch and smooth release allowed me to increase the cadence. Going headwind, and sidewind never felt so easy on my body. The locked-in feel of the blade even made the board seem more stable! Couldn’t be happier!

  31. Love it!!

    Paul-July 21, 2022 at 9:04 pm

Ordered this paddle from the special offers deal and saved a few £’s. Can’t fault the paddle, super light , very powerful through the water. Love the textured feel of the shaft , doesn’t slip as much as the smooth shaft, much better to grip. Haven’t done any speed tests but could definitely feel I was paddling faster.

  32. Amazing Paddle!

    me-July 9, 2022 at 9:33 am

Very light with just enough flex to be gentle on the shoulders.

  33. What a beauty!

    tom_halverson-June 21, 2022 at 6:58 am

Wow was I surprised at first glance how light and well made this paddle was, the carbon weave is beautiful. In the water I was even more impressed by the lack of cavitation, smooth attack and power. After a few hours in open ocean my shoulders and arms had good life where normally I’d start to get a bit sore. Expensive yes but well worth the investment!

  34. Best paddle on the market

    Rich Burgess-June 6, 2022 at 1:51 am

I have the large medium 75 and its absolutely perfect. Performs amazing on both my 11’2 Naish Hardboard tourer and 12’6 O’Shea Inflatable race board. Using it for training for 100km paddle next month. Cant wait!

  35. Super light paddle

    snipertat-May 20, 2022 at 7:00 pm

This is a light paddle and perfect for my SIC !

  36. A completely new experience and worth the investment

    Oscar Lesmana-May 8, 2022 at 7:40 pm

I decided to bring my SUP experience to the next level, and Hydro FlowX just a perfect paddle to accompanies the journey. Hydro FlowX will give you a completely new experience to catch and pull with full control and less fatigue. This blade just fantastic blade ever. It’s a worth investment blade.

  37. Definitely made a huge difference in fatigue (or lack there of)

    osirisdesigner-April 10, 2022 at 2:53 am

Love this paddle! Have been using it for long distance trips (10+mi), cruising, workouts, racing, down winding open ocean & it’s definitely made a huge difference in fatigue (or lack there of). Best paddle I’ve ever owned. Got the ray v2 fin setup also which has been a noticeably awesome ride adjustment. Go get all this gear for your boarding… highly recommended!

  38. Love this Paddle

    Robert Cowan-February 27, 2022 at 7:12 pm

Been using the Hydro Flow X Paddle for about 5 months now mainly for flatwater training and for sprint and longer distance racing. Firstly the paddle handle really fits well into your hand allowing you to spear the catch and pull with control. The medium stiffness shaft gives me the right amount of flex without fatiguing my shoulders and good feedback when I’m putting in the power. The blade is fantastic in that it provides a really strong catch and ability to pull with power from as soon as you sink the blade, but you still have full control of the blade as you pull through the power phase, which means I can direct the direction of my stroke to adjust for tracking or direction. Because of this control I don’t need to “Death grip” my bottom hand, which means I can go for more extended reach. I’ve gone for a medium blade which is slightly smaller than my other paddles, which together the paddle being really light is good for higher cadence training and also longer distance paddling. The bag and paddle are of excellent quality and delivery was really quick ( even to Australia)

  39. Can't wait for paddle season

    David Klamm-February 26, 2022 at 6:01 am

Beautiful paddle, great looking paddle bag. I haven’t yet had the opportunity to use it because I’m still stuck in cold weather but I can’t speak highly enough about the customer service and how quickly orders make it to the MidWest from Hawaii. Not only that, every question I had about figuring out which paddle to purchase was answered quickly and with thought. Will update if for some reason I don’t love the paddle but that’s hard to imagine.

  40. Very impressive paddle.

    jc4065-January 30, 2022 at 7:46 pm

This purchase was an excellent choice. The paddle is very light and responsive. It has a clean entry and exit. The power scoop locks in the power phase with no wavering. It has a nice texture on the shaft for grip. I went from a 91 blade to the medium 82 and that was a great choice for me . The medium is easier on my body and I go just as fast with more endurance. Very pleased with the paddle and all the data on the website . Customer service is top notch along with all of the specs on the website. Also comes with the best paddle bag out there.

  41. Excellent Paddle

    sotiris.panteli-January 20, 2022 at 12:16 am

This paddle provides speed while paddling, but it is so soft in my joints, and my shoulders. Thanks team.

  42. Great product, awesome service

    christopherproudlove-January 3, 2022 at 2:14 pm

Thanks Chris and team for your great service during the buying process. You provided personal advice and I think I have found a paddle that truly fits my needs. At 155lbs and the wrong side of 50, I went for a small blade and slim shaft. The paddle feels solid all the way through the stroke and, even with a fast cadence, it enters and exits the water cleanly. In terms of size, the size small feels very similar to my current 82 sq inch paddle with far less shape. I can’t wait to get out and race with it this spring.

  43. My new favorite sup paddle

    Hoang Pham-January 2, 2022 at 2:30 pm

WOW! Was the impression I got with the first stroke. I felt the solid power at the catch and the smooth blade entry. I put in 8 miles, 10 miles, 12 miles training sessions and still felt good afterward. This is my new favorite paddle. Thanks Chris for the help with sizing.

  44. An Evolutionary Paddle Improvement

    markhodges22-October 27, 2021 at 10:18 am

The HydroFlox X is such a distinct and positive improvement in paddle performance, that I was shocked. The catch is solid, and the expected blade flutter has been eliminated. The paddle has a smooth exit with no shudder, vibration or excess water retention. For me, as an older flatwater racer, the lightness of the paddle and the flexibility of the shaft has all but eliminated abuse to my sensitive shoulder joints. The design and quality stands far above any other paddle I have tried.

  46. Growing kid - New Paddle...again

    Ozzy-October 21, 2021 at 12:09 pm

This is my son’s second Hydro FlowX. Growing like teens do his first BP needed to be replaced. We originally purchased his first Hydro FlowX paddle to replace a paddle that was incorrectly sized for him when he began racing causing some real shoulder issues. The Hydro FlowX helped him relieve much of that discomfort and now has the next size up. Slim shaft with Small blade. Chris asked some questions, made sure he was sized right and had the correct shaft and blade combo for his size. It arrived quickly so he could begin his adjustment to the new stick and not interfere with his training. Personal service, quick delivery, the right size paddle/blade pairing and virtually free from a lingering injury? Can’t beat that. He loves his Hydro FlowX and Sonic fin combo. He is already waiting for the release of the Hydro SprintX!

  47. an exceptional paddle

    Johan BRETON-October 20, 2021 at 9:30 am

A ligtht paddle and smooth perfect !

  48. Great Paddle - So pleased

    globalcampo1-October 19, 2021 at 10:40 am

I bought the HydroFlow X as my first high end paddle. Right away I could tell tell the difference. The catch was different, flutter was gone, and my shoulders also felt so much better. I even won my first race this past weekend using this paddle. I’ve been very pleased with my choice to purchase this paddle and I think it is an excellent choice if you are looking for a new paddle. This should definitely be the first paddle you’d consider.

  49. Great paddle - not scratch resistant

    michaelemersoncastellano-October 18, 2021 at 1:38 pm

It’s a phenomenal paddle. Lightweight. Fast. You definitely have to get used to it, paddling past your ankle, it makes you pay. I just wish it was coated a tad bit better, I barely touched the edge to an oyster and I have a huge gash down the blade.

  50. Hydroflow X Love

    jeffrey-October 17, 2021 at 5:42 pm

I bought the Hydroflow X paddle at the end of May 2021 in preparation for doing long paddles later in the Summer. In late July, I started circumnavigating all the US Islands in the Salish Sea and have been doing them ever since. Many of these paddles are over 30 miles in variable conditions. If it weren’t for this paddle, I don’t think I could do them without fatigue. The paddle is incredibly light but always gives me a solid catch especially when I’m tired. It doesn’t flutter and when I’m tired, actually helps correct my placement. I love this paddle!!

  51. It didn't disappoint!

    Richard Smith-October 17, 2021 at 12:30 pm

I had been using the Hydro L and M for a couple of years. I would use the M on longer paddles. I had to try the HydroFlowX L after reading the reviews. It didn’t disappoint! It has a forgiving catch, it really locks in during the power phase, and the L has been good for any distance. It just feels right!

  52. MY SECOND HYDRO FLOW X

    Mark Evans-October 17, 2021 at 10:58 am

I love Hydro Flow X stiff shaft with XL blade. However, I needed a more flexible shaft for some long winter training in preparation for some Ultra races next season. The flexible shaft makes a huge difference over longer paddles. My cadence is up and my average speed on a 15 mile paddle is up also. These are so light and the catch is so positive and instinctive, you can just keep going. I’m really looking forward to my age group races next year! Also my paddle travelled from Maui to my home in West Wales. It arrived safely in its own bag, from order to receipt, it took seven days! Outstanding service. Now looking for a set of Race Fins!

  53. I Love this paddle

    Alvin Torosyan-October 17, 2021 at 9:22 am

The entire process of ordering this paddle was spectacular. The paddle is incredible and equally the storage bag is phenomenal. Thank you Chris!

  54. Prevents injuries

    Thorsten Jakobsson-October 17, 2021 at 9:10 am

I have paddled with my FlowX for over 6 months and more than 2000 kilometers. I used to feel shoulderpain on my hard paddles, but I don’t feel anything of that after switching to FlowX. It helps me to stay away from injuries. It was especially helpful during my recent 11 Cities 220 km race. Thanks

  55. Hydro FlowX has improved my stroke efficiency

    lahakorpaz-October 17, 2021 at 6:27 am

I have used the HydroFlowX for several times now in flat water and small swells, and it has improved my stroke efficiency very nicely in both conditions. I took the S blade and it’s feels much bigger than it is (like the M blade of the previous model), the Medium100 shaft is perfect (!!!) for my shoulders . Thank you Chris for your advice and patience, the X is Awesome!

  56. What a game changer

    Christopher Hayward-September 25, 2021 at 5:53 am

One of the smoothest fastest paddle I have used. The customer service is awesome. Chris was really helpful on sizing and answering questions. If you are a avid paddler or racer do yourself a favor a get this paddle.

  57. Big Gains on the Hydro FlowX

    Steve Axt-September 18, 2021 at 8:33 am

I liked the X so much I bought a second one in a larger size and WOW!. When I went from a medium Hydro to a medium Hydro FlowX, I mostly noticed that the catch and mid-stroke locked in better. I guess I was using the Hydro efficiently as I didn’t see much speed increase, mostly just increased ease of use. Then I got a large and my sprint top end immediately went up by 10%. Previous comparisons of a bigger blade from a different manufacturer to the medium Hydro FlowX had resulted in a dead heat at a sprint and no comparison in favor of the X for long sessions.

  58. I thought no paddle could be better than the Hydro...

    Kim Schive-September 9, 2021 at 6:41 am

But this paddle is. I loved my Hydro and couldn’t imagine that any other paddle would ever replace it,in my hands or heart. This paddle has done just that. Light and even more powerful, clean catch, strong thrust, and easy on the shoulders! I’m paddling faster and longer than ever before. Did a 20 miles this past Sunday, half of it upstream against wind and current. And my shoulders felt great — even a day later.

  59. What an upgrade

    Tyler peterson-September 1, 2021 at 3:19 pm

I tested out a friend’s at a race and was sold after 5 strokes. I have used it 7 times and love it. What a change. I was thinking the medium blade would be too small but it was perfect with way more grab at the catch that I would have imagined.

  60. Fantastic Paddle

    micro.1394-August 28, 2021 at 4:43 pm

Amazing paddle! I immediately noticed I could maintain the same amount of speed as with my Hippostick while putting in noticeably less effort. Texture on the shaft is really nice and provides great grip, nice clean catch, and a ton of thrust.
Also really fast shipping to boot!

  61. Very good paddle!!!

    fuyuki.tsumagari-August 24, 2021 at 2:35 pm

It is possible to make a reliable catch and feel the power in one stroke. Therefore, in the upwind, it has propulsive power against the wind, and in the downwind, it can aggressively chase more forward waves.

  62. Night and day. Hydro flow X

    Mark Evans-August 2, 2021 at 11:04 am

Received my Hydro flow X paddle, the stiffer shaft and the XL Blade. It arrived super quick to my work in West Wales. A little worried at first, had I gone to big or too stiff. But I analysed the info on the Website over and over, it’s very accurate! It came in the paddle bag and well packaged. The quality of finish and the feel of the paddle didn’t disappoint. On the water: a strong positive catch, solid power and easy recovery. You have to get on top of the paddle to get the best out of it, The design promoted a clean catch. I found it gave a lot of confidence when committing to the catch and when things got a bit rough the paddle didn’t let me down. As for my choice of blade and shaft. The info was spot on, I’m 6’2 and 102kgs, so my choice is perfect for me! I’m afraid my collection of Werners may gather dust from here on in!

  63. Excellent catch and drive

    Harry-July 26, 2021 at 10:31 pm

Very good and sharp for catching, and the scoop provides you lots of thrust

  64. Amazing paddle

    Tracey N.-July 26, 2021 at 11:16 am

I have been using the Hydro FlowX for a couple months. I love the design of the blade. It glide in catches water smoothly. It’s super lightweight too.

  65. Very VERY light - M size blade, Med SDS shaft 416 grams

    Erik Dossett-June 30, 2021 at 6:31 am

I have been using quality Ke Nalu Carbon Fiber paddles for about 5 years, this is my first Black Project paddle. I’m 5’10, 260 and I paddle an unlimited Joe Bark SUP. I can maintain 5mph for an hour for training. The HydroFlowX is about 114 grams (4oz) lighter than my Ke Nalu with Konihi blade. I’m still getting used to the HydroflowX blade face ( I’m working on the catch – right now I seem to be scooping water/making it spit water on my feet instead of a silent “plant” ) .I brought both my Ke Nalu 92 out on a 2 hour paddle on my local lake to compare. The biggest difference? At about 1.5 hours of paddling, I switched back to my Ke Nalu – a VERY good, very light paddle – and it felt like it was waterlogged. In the first 10 minutes I wasn’t really feeling a between the paddles. However, I kept changing back and forth and as time went on the difference got bigger, and that switch-over at 1.5 hours really showed the extra weight in my old paddle. I can imagine after a long-distance paddle that this will be more and more of an advantage. Both top of the line paddles are very “grippy” in the water if planted correctly – both have good flex in the shaft which should mean less risk to shoulders etc. I think I would prefer the “Medium75-Slim” shaft now that I have had this in my hands to compare – I do have large hands but I am used to the feel of the Ke Nalu and it’s quite a bit smaller than this shaft. I think the M blade size is great – the better I get at paddling – the smaller my blades seem to be and still be effective. I’m very strong and this is plenty of blade for fast/ long-distance paddling for exercise or touring. I don’t feel it “slip” and I can keep up fast stroke rate of 40 spm for hours.

  66. Light and powerful

    Harry-June 28, 2021 at 1:41 pm

It’s light and strong, increases my speed & I can paddle more.

  67. Works perfect in all dimensions

    Susanne Eder-Meyer-June 4, 2021 at 11:09 am

I’ve already left a review for the FlowX – I have all versions now from M to XL. For me (female) the M is a very good choice as it gives a lot of power during the stroke … the M is really comparable to the L version of many other paddles regarding power. Usually I was using bigger blades so far but for the FlowX I really tend now to use the M instead of the L version. The XL is really perfect choice for stronger paddlers .. works perfectly also with the stiff shaft option— can really recommend the Flow X in all dimensions 🙂 🙂 🙂

  68. Further, Longer, Faster - 1 month in

    Adrian-June 4, 2021 at 8:42 am

After 1 month and 50-100 miles using the paddle for a mix of touring, performance technique training, and cruising there’s no going back. Weighing in at sub-400g it’s a great step up and helping force my technique to the next level. While speed isn’t my primary goal being able to paddle further and for longer is and the paddle certainly enables this for me. It’s a design that’s clearly had hours of thought and development invested into it and not just the blade but the shaft as well which uses the layup to grip more one direction to the other. Kudos to Chris and the team!

  69. Mind blowing paddle

    Fernanda-May 31, 2021 at 2:33 pm

Opening the box, the first thing that you notice is how light and balanced it is.
On the water the paddle sticks on the water very firmly, so it’s easy to bring your hips to it. Definitely I got the extra power that I needed, with the same blade size that I had before.
The other good point are the edges: they feel softer when I hit my board with the paddle.
The only aspect that I was not sure about when I tried the first time, was the handle. I bought it with the skinny shaft because I have small hands, and I didn’t have any choices on handles. For this one is the Palm handle. At the beginning it was a little bulky, but after the second use, I realized that it forced me to have my hand opened instead of grabbed. So at the end it is good for me. In any case, I think that it would be a good idea to offer handle choices.
    Great paddle.

  70. get this paI can't wait to ddle ! Its going to be so much better than my Ohana .I just have 1 more week till it gets shipped . Chris has been doing a great job of keeping me in formed about it through the build .

    JOHN DUNBAR-May 11, 2021 at 5:57 pm

I can”t wait to get this paddle! Its going to be so much better than my Ohana .I just have 1 more week till it gets shipped . Chris has been doing a great job of keeping me in formed about it through the build ,and I’m so stoked!! Don’t worry about the price quality costs and I’ve never regretted buying quality ! No one ever died saying “gee i wish i had worked more and paddle less “.

  71. Hydro FlowX totally great

    Dave Enger-May 5, 2021 at 10:49 am

It looked like the Hydro FlowX would be an improvement over the Hydro I’ve been paddling. I had no idea how better Hydro FlowX would turn out to be ( and the old Hydro 88 was, by a good bit, my favorite paddle). The New FlowX catches better & pulls straighter. These added up to more speed & distance per stroke.

  72. HYDRO FLOW X-ELLENT

    Brian Hartman-April 29, 2021 at 9:27 am

If your looking for a race paddle the HYDRO FLOW X is it. It is night and day compared to the competition in every aspect. NOT A GIMMICK!!!!

  73. It’s just the best paddle I’ve ever used.

    Sergio Antas-April 24, 2021 at 9:12 am

I’m a 47 yo paddler, and far from a pro. However, the difference I felt in the efficiency of my stroke is just overwhelming. The catch is perfect, the power I now feel in every stroke is simply amazing and the feeling I now get from every ride is if as I get better and better each time. Just try one. I bet you won’t be able to resist to order one immediately.

  74. Best Long Distance and Race Paddle!

    Ernie Ward-April 22, 2021 at 6:06 am

Best paddle I’ve used for training and racing over the past 12 years! Less fatigue, soreness, and faster! I’ve had Naish and QB; this is next level!

  75. SOPHISTICATED AND SMOOTH

    Christopher Burns-April 22, 2021 at 4:57 am

I have had the new paddle for about a month. My older Black Project paddle was excellent but this one surpasses it. Better catch. Very smooth on the pull. Light. I am a huge fan of Black Project and highly recommend the paddle.

  76. I paddle a lot !

    Niall Colquhoun-April 22, 2021 at 3:45 am

It’s light, it’s strong, it increases my speed & I can paddle more.

  77. Game Changer

    Lauren Flowers-April 22, 2021 at 1:00 am

Wow! I knew that paddles are important to your development as a paddler but I had no idea how considerable that change can be…until Hydro FlowX. The slick almost weightless catch, the drive feels powerful, productive, and fast; the release…effortless, and the recovery is clean, fluid, and initially caught me off balance a bit because I was not accustomed to the featherlike weight and had to adjust my expectation in order to remain consistent. I am in my second season of race training, I am 50 and while in pretty good shape I was not expecting to start my season with the fastest mile I’ve ever done without being on the water in months and I certainly didn’t expect to not “feel” every stroke the next day…I was energized, pain-free, and amazed! Absolutely worth the investment…this is one purchase that I will never regret!

  78. Incredible Paddle, With Less Fatigue

    Patrick Monahan-April 19, 2021 at 1:26 pm

After trying-out multiple paddles, over a four month period, and speaking with Chris Freeman at Black Project, I decided to purchase the Hydro Flow X paddle. Generally, I paddle three to four times per week, averaging 6 to 8 miles. There are quite a few things that stand-out about the Flow X Paddle. My stroke rate per minute increased from about 50 strokes to approximately 56 strokes per minute. The shaft is flexible and design of the blade ( I Paddle a Slim Shaft, with a Medium 82 Blade) have increased my power through the stroke, with essentially no flutter. Also, I’ve noticed minimized fatigue during longer workouts, and reduce strain in my shoulders, thus no worries about possible injury. If anyone in considering purchasing a new paddle, I would stronger recommend contacting Chris Freeman, and discuss which Black Project a paddle would best suit your requirements.

  79. Insanely Awesome. your just getting a paddle or fin.

    Marty Buzas-April 7, 2021 at 11:05 am

Before I rave about how cutting edge this paddle is, I want to take a second and mention how incredible the customer service is. At BPP your not a number or a decimal point. Chris and the team at BPP truly care that you/us the SUP community are receiving exactly what we need. In my book that is worth the weight in gold.
On to the paddle. Starting with the shaft. No more Wet or sweaty hand sliding down the shaft when you dig in. The shaft has a unique anti slip gripping surface. Kinda like shark skin. Love it. Looking forward to humidity lol. Blade cuts through the water effortlessly. I was able to increase my speed and strokes with substantial decrease in fatigue.
I know exactly what my mile times and how many strokes it to me to achieve that mile. This paddle has knocked significant time and effort off of my miles.
I strongly suggest this paddle to anyone interested in moving over a lot of water. Basically all users you will not be disappointed.

  80. Unbelievably light. Like wizards made it.

    HB-March 25, 2021 at 9:18 am

I have been paddling weekly since I received the HydroX in January (super fast shipping!) and it is by far the best thing I have purchased in recent memory. Super light and fantastic to use for long paddles and sprint workouts. XS is great for me as a lighter paddler – my strokes still feel powerful but I noticed less shoulder fatigue after 15-20km. Looking forward to increasing my mileage and speed with this paddle in 2021!

  81. Ultra fast ! As The delivering in France and as the Paddle !!!

    nicolas de la fuente-March 7, 2021 at 7:16 am

I had an hydro 88 before and i have bought this Hydro FlowX in XL (95,5) . I wasn’t sure of my choice but I have paddled today 32km with it and it was a real pleasure and none hurt. Very powerful paddle which I can go easily to 9,6/10 km/h. Thanks a lot for that !!

  82. Ultra fast ! The delivering in France and the Paddle !!! 🤣💪🏽

  83. Paddle delivers on its promise

    Mark Staal-March 3, 2021 at 10:20 am

This paddle is my best buy ever in SUP. I have a history of shoulder problems, but this paddle is amazing. It has a firm stable catch, no wobble whatsoever. It plants really well. And then I expected to feel a lot of force on my body like my other paddles, but no, the power delivery is super smooth and stable. So it really is easier on the body. With this paddle I want to paddle faster and longer so it’s great for racing but also superb for cruising with the grippy texcarbon. The service from Chris was exceptional with choosing paddle and shaft combination. Compliments. I can recommend this paddle to anyone. it’s superb.

  84. Magical recommendation

    Stefan Zimmermann-February 14, 2021 at 4:49 am

Magical. My 2nd paddle from BP and I thought it could not get any better. The Hydro FlowX is even more defined in the catch, in the power phase it glides incredibly clean through the water and the power feels like you’re paddling a paddle blade one size larger. In addition, the perfect processing of the paddle and the top service from Chris. Delivery time around half the world to Switzerland takes just 6 days. Thanks Chris

  85. I have no words to describe it.

    Lucas Rodríguez López-January 29, 2021 at 9:40 am

I have no words…this paddle it’s amazing and stunning. Comparing with my other paddles allows me to advance a little more with each stroke and make a few more strokes per minute.
It is a Wonder of the World of SUP.

  86. Amazing Paddle

    keith conway-January 18, 2021 at 6:39 am

I have been using the Hydro for 2 years and now I’m using the Flow-x and it is even better. Did not think it was possible to raise the bar but these guys totally nailed it. Significant difference in tracking.

  87. Super fast, super light!

    Susanne Eder-Meyer-January 9, 2021 at 11:58 am

This paddle is really super light and super fast.. and I want to spend some words here on comparing it to the Hydro which is as well a perfect paddle! In my opinion, the FlowX behaves different compared to the Hydro and I needed to adjust the paddle technique to it – so it’s not just exchanging the paddles and you get faster. Biggest difference is however the great stability and power during the pulling phase and much tougher catch for the FlowX. I still think that I need some more time to really use the full potential of the FlowX, but – although it is a little bit smaller than my Hydro, I can already paddle faster with it. This paddle has an incredible potential once you adjust to it 🙂

  88. Hydro FlowX- One of a Kind Paddle!

    Jose M. Garcia-Lopez-January 4, 2021 at 11:17 am

This new paddle is truly something! I love my Hydro paddles and have been my go to paddles for over 3 years as they have helped me significantly in improving my stroke efficiency while protecting my left shoulder which suffers from chronic biceps and deltoid tendonitis. The new Hydro FlowX paddle pushes efficiency and cleanliness of your paddle stroke even further, basically eliminating any wobble while the paddle is in the water, resulting in more power while protecting your shoulder. The feel of this paddle is different and can take a bit to get used to but once you do the increase in power, speed and cleanliness is remarkable. Highly recommend it! Thank you Chris for improving on an already amazing product and moving the sport forward!

  89. Stability and Control

    Stuart Holmes-December 30, 2020 at 12:11 pm

After my last review, felt it important to add that I actually ripped off my right pectoral a few years back. Recovering from that is how I got into SUP. I never had it reattached though and with all my other paddles I have always struggled to control the flutter on that side since I can’t stabilise properly. I wanted to add that I haven’t had that issue with this paddle! Even on my weak side the stroke is extremely smooth and I feel in control at all times which says a lot for the design!

  90. Super smooth high performance - high octane paddle

    Stoke on the Water - Joel-December 18, 2020 at 12:09 pm

For those of you that already love everything about the Hydro paddle seeking that extra horse power – this is what you are looking for. This paddle is surprisingly light, super smooth, but delivers a power punch to your paddle stroke!

  91. Incredible paddle, service and advice!

    Stuart Holmes-December 18, 2020 at 11:32 am

I had originally planned to buy a Lava but after talking to Chris and the service I received, I ended up upgrading to the Hydro FlowX….and I’m glad I did. All my paddles so far have been top of the range but the difference in catch, release and smoothness throughout the stroke is incredible. My cadence increased immediately but with less strain required per stroke. A paddle and a company i would not hesitate to recommend!

  92. The Hydro Flow X is an Amazing Paddle!

    John Troppmann-December 17, 2020 at 3:29 pm

So light with a great “purchase” on the catch and super stable through the power phase. Nice boost on the release as well. I did 10, 100 yard sprints, 5 with each paddle and my max speed was 3/10mph faster when compared with the Hydro. You always wonder if the effort is greater because you want the new paddle to be faster, but my stroke rate was consistent and my “perceived exertion” felt the same. This was all done in 26 degree (F) air temp and 43 degree water. Can’t wait to try it in warmer conditions, but that will be a few months here in North Idaho! Chris has nailed it on this one!

  93. New Hydro FlowX is a game changer!

    Jim N.-December 15, 2020 at 5:14 am

You will have to try this paddle to understand how silky smooth and powerful it is. Chris and the team at BP have somehow managed to make a paddle that is, not only faster and lighter, but it is a pleasure to paddle. The catch is super solid but not jarring and you can feel the power building all the way through the stroke until the shaft releases its bend and gives you a final burst of acceleration. I just got back from my fourth paddle session and about 40 miles in conditions ranging from dead calm to 15mph winds with light chop and have loved every mile with this paddle. I’m excited to see how much faster I can go when races start up again.

  94. Hydro FlowX... What a machine!

    D.W.-December 14, 2020 at 3:53 am

My first BP paddle and I’m in love!!!
Much stronger catch then my other paddles, very stable in the water,…
An amazing paddle for fine female hands, the slim shaft in combination with the Hydro FlowX is just a machine!
Soooo lightweight, it’s a party to paddle with.
I’m a big fan, this is definitely my best paddle ever!!

  95. Next step in Hydro evolution

    Fred Snyder-December 13, 2020 at 2:32 pm

Started with a Hydro L, then went to a Hydro XL, now to the Hydro FlowX XL, the next step in Hydro Evolution. Better water release, stronger catch throughout the power band. lightest weight yet, shaft seems to have a little bit better grip, faster cadence as it pulls so easy, my favorite paddle to date. Oh, it is also gorgeous to look at!

  96. Beautiful Attention to Detail - Hydro FlowX

    Daniel Pena-December 8, 2020 at 2:13 pm

Definitely a noticeable paddle experience with more catch and power. No flutter just stable and smooth strokes.
Beautiful attention to detail, the initial weight once you have it in hand and its appearance is amazing.

  97. Incredible FlowX... SUCH POWERFUL CATCH... SUPERCHARGED!

    Michaël Rasborn-December 7, 2020 at 7:25 pm

Wow… this is SO much more powerful than the previous Hydro Large… almost got carried away on headwindy/chop 3.5 mile Sat… 2 minutes faster in the end, after a rest hit 9.5mph burst sprint. Wow… such grip; kept accelerating my stroke fantastic !!!!! Sunday. 16.5 miles lake dam buoys and back = in 3h12m… (3h7m44s is current pr) windy all the way upwind for 8 miles and boat wake… then winds shifted round on return for more headwind paddling, raising my HR 10-15 bpm! Thank you for the amazing innovative cool product.

  98. Hydro FlowX Review Downwind, Flatwater & Surfing

    Bill Silliman-December 1, 2020 at 9:42 am

The Hydro FlowX feels great. Has a lot of catch and power. I’ve had time for Flat water, choppy water, side shop, upwind, downwind, and surfing. After all of these no fatigue, the medium shaft feels really good has a ton of flex more than I’m used to with the slim shaft but with less fatigue at the end of sessions. As stated earlier the catch and power is seriously off the charts. The times I’m getting on same runs in flat, downwind and mix conditions are faster than average. The paddle is automatic… meaning you don’t have to correct your stroke as much and focus in paddling form more and less on paddle control. Even in the crazy surf sprints on a 14’er!

  99. Hydro FlowX Ocean Testing Upwind-Downwind

    Bill Silliman-November 19, 2020 at 7:09 pm

Got the Hydro FlowX today in the Florida Keys 🏝 and I dunno what tech voodoo you’ve done to make the Hydro better…. but y’all did! I’ll admit I was skeptical on if this was gimmick or real tech. But today in the FL Keys it’s blowing 25-30 and I hit the water for a 2 mile tuneup paddle. 1 mile into the wind and 1 mile with the wind. On scooped out paddles I’ve personally had an issue with them Fluttering. Hence why I moved to the a Hydro paddle. But man hammering into the wind and waves today the Hydro FlowX didn’t even flutter once! Solid stable strokes with noticeable power behind it. Then I’m down wind (surf conditions) I’ve had issues again with scooped paddles fluttering when your hammering/sprinting to catch a wave and the Hydro FlowX was Stable and Solid! Wow 😳 the Hydro FlowX is No Joke and somehow lighter than my Hydro Slim Paddle. Super Stoked by this Paddle that I’m seriously heading out again right now!

  100. Smooooother, lighter, FASTER....This paddle is AMAZING!

    Wendy Tillett-November 19, 2020 at 6:43 am

I have been using The Black Project Hydro paddle for the past 2 years. As a smaller paddler, my blade size has been x-small and then this summer I was curious to know weather going up to a small would make a difference. I happily paddled well into the fall, satisfied with my choice. And THEN this happened: The HYDRO FlowX was born and presented to the world! This paddle is AMAZING…it is lighter (how could this even be?), it is so, so smooooooth and it moves through the water with ease and power! I have switched back to an x-small paddle and that is all I need. 2021 SUP season here I come:)

  101. Smooth and Strong

    Steve Axt-November 12, 2020 at 12:01 pm

Coming from the Hydro of same length and medium blade size, the X in my hands has completely done away with any noisy, cavitating catches. The catch is buttery smooth and then strongly locked in. With the blade locked, I can now focus on improving my mid to late stroke phase. The AFT feature and longer throat of the blade has me wanting to go about an inch deeper in the water than previously with the Hydro, again nudging me towards my goal of improving mid-stroke power. Taken together, I’m convinced that the Hydro FlowX is simply the best tool at hand to up my average and top speeds.

  102. Easy Speed

    Steve Phillips-October 28, 2020 at 1:52 am

Magic. I was skeptical since the Hydro is the best paddle I’ve ever used, but the Hydro FlowX is noticeably better. The blade seems to plant itself and stay planted. The catch is slightly softer and easier on the joints, but very solid. I’m able to grab the water and propel the board past the blade with little to no slippage and with remarkable speed for the effort. Easy speed. Almost feels like cheating. I plan to enjoy this advantage while I can before everyone switches. It’s been a long time since I’ve been this excited about a piece of SUP race equipment.
