A lightweight & powerful SUP Paddle built for fitness, touring and recreational racing

Silky smooth and consistently forgiving, the Hydro TempoX is the ultimate flat-water paddle for fitness and recreational paddling enthusiasts. Ideal for those paddlers looking to take the next step, the Hydro TempoX incorporates DNA from our best-selling Hydro FlowX design to deliver an unparalleled paddling experience, at a reduced price point. We used our proprietary Advanced Flow and Power Scoop technology to minimize blade movement, resulting in an incredibly smooth and rhythmic paddling experience.

The higher 10° blade angle creates a more forgiving catch, further enhancing the feel and comfort of the paddle stroke. This combination of innovative blade design and higher blade angle allows paddlers to find their flow and hone their technique. Built in our REFLEX100 construction, the Hydro TempoX is lightweight, durable, and responsive for a performance-orientated paddling experience. For increased flex appropriate for smaller paddlers the Medium and Small sizes come with the more flexible REFLEX90 shafts.

The new Power Grip ergonomic racing handle ensures your hand remains secure during high-cadence paddling bursts and comfortable during long days on the water.

The Hydro TempoX is available in 1-Piece, Adjustable and 3-Piece Adjustable options.

All Hydro TempoX paddles come complete with our Paddle Bag ($125 value).

  1. This paddle is absolutely awesome!

    vgertwo-December 30, 2024 at 9:41 am

The weight, ergonomics, and just “feel” is just right…. Definitely money well spent and zero regrets. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a well made, high performance, quality paddle.

  2. Perfect paddle for me.

    rogerfloyd-November 5, 2024 at 6:08 pm

I’ve been using a base level decent adjustable carbon paddle but recently got a new composite touring board to go further and faster as well as keep track of my stats and become a decent paddler. I knew the Hydro Tempo X was going to be the right model but needed advice on which one to get. I dropped Chris a line on a Saturday morning describing myself and goals. He got back to me immediately and recommended a fixed shaft just the right length and a large blade. I had it in my hands in California on Wednesday. Beautiful paddle with great service. It catches and holds better. It feels good in my hands and I feel I can really dig hard with it. My stats one week apart on the same flat course for one hour In the same conditions shows an average speed increase of .5 mph and a max speed increase of 1 mph. Same heart rate and no pain. Stats aside it just feels and looks great and that’s motivating to get up early. Free shipping and a cool bag that also holds my fin and leash, I think the Hydro Tempo X is an excellent value.

  3. The Best

    Tom Scanland-November 4, 2024 at 3:38 pm

I originally purchased an Adjustable Lava paddle during a trip to Maui in 2017. It was an amazing upgrade from cheaper Carbon paddles i had tried. After 7 years using the Lava I was interested in checking out the next level paddle and I am so excited about the Tempo! I love the complex curves of the blade, shaft grip finish, and low weight. I highly recommend this to anyone looking to go farther or faster!

  4. Incredible Paddle

    tuckermanpaws-August 23, 2024 at 8:57 am

I’m not a SUP racer or even close to someone that would be a SUP racer. I am just a guy in NH that paddles flatwater rivers and lakes once or twice a week. Getting my wife to agree that I needed this paddle was far more challenging than deciding to buy it, but I managed to do both. I couldn’t be more impressed with Black Project SUP as a business. Chris was awesome to work with and basically held my hand (virtually) through this purchase. I have no idea what I want in a paddle, but he seemed to know and I think he was right. The paddle showed up pretty quickly considering the distance it traveled and the shipping was free. It was flawless when I took it out of the box and I couldn’t believe how light it was compared to my freebie carbon 2-piece that came with my board. The first time using the paddle was different than I expected. The catch is insane and seems to stick as soon as the paddle mostly enters the water, but I kind of expected that. The comfort of the handle and shaft is incredible, but I also expected that. Somehow the shaft feels more grippy than my crappy old paddle, but still smooth. The flex is where I was thrown off. It is far more stiff than my 2-piece and I was not expecting that. It feels great when paddling and I haven’t noticed any shoulder pain, so I think the flex is appropriate for the XL blade size. But compared to my friend’s Lava 1-piece, his has much more flex than this paddle. This paddle means business, though. Maybe I am just excited about using it, but I feel like I can paddle further and faster than I could before. I don’t have enough data to confirm that, but I am collecting every time I go out. At the very least, I feel pretty cool using it and that definitely has value. I like to float near people holding it up a bit to show it off. No one has commented, but I know they’re impressed. I don’t like how much I now worry about scratching my paddle, but it does come with a nice bag to protect it. I would buy from Black Project SUP again without question.

  5. A truly awesome paddle!

    rmschlem-July 26, 2024 at 11:04 am

I had been using the same paddle for over ten years until I thought it was probably time for an upgrade. I reached out to Chris at the Black Project who guided me through the paddle selection process based on my paddling experience. He recommended the TempoX and I couldn’t be happier. I paddle for fitness, in the 8-10 mile range, where speed, an elevated heart rate, and sweat all make for a successful paddle. Compared to my older paddle the TempoX offers a faster, more responsive and efficient stroke with a faster cadence and less fatigue. My speeds have increased as have my paddling distances, all contributing to a more satisfying paddling experience. I only wish that I had the TempoX much sooner!

  6. If you are serious.

    TheDomi-July 19, 2024 at 12:27 pm

If you’re serious about taking your paddleing to the next level, get this paddle. The catch is really forgiving and clean. The drive and power is really noticeable and far exceeds other carbon paddles and I’ve used. This is my go to for speed and endurance.

  7. hydro tempox paddle, my first quality paddle

    David Gregson-July 15, 2024 at 4:58 pm

i’m a pretty novice paddler wanting to get better . This paddle is going to help me achieve my goal , feels so nice in my hands , i have already noticed a quicker and smoother action in both my stroke and transfer from one side to the other. Called and got great advice from Chris on what to get and couldn’t be happier.

  8. Best 1 piece paddle right under the Hydro FlowX

    fredylee-July 14, 2024 at 3:03 pm

i finally got a chance to test the 1 piece Hydro Tempo X. I also have the Hydro FlowX and the 2 piece tempo adjustable. I’d say this is a solid 1 piece. Though I do prefer my Hydro Flow X in comparison. Definitely better than the 2 piece adjustable

  9. Perfect paddle for me

    namurray-July 10, 2024 at 9:54 pm

First, great guidance in choosing the paddle that was best for me. I am small and an intermediate paddler. A 24.5” 12’6” sic rs is my usual board. I was using a black project lava paddle and v unfortunately needed a new paddle. The lava was my first “good” paddle and I loved it. So light and I could paddle for hours without getting tired. The price jump to the tempo was v inhibiting! But it has improved my catch and I get more power/speed from it even staying with a small blade. The perfect step up!

  10. Wonderful Paddle!

    Jeff Cole-June 22, 2023 at 7:14 am

Amazing flatwater paddle for fitness/fast recreational paddling! I have a history of shoulder and neck injuries, wanted something fast but forgiving. The catch angle and flex really help. The AFT design results in a smoother paddle stroke, reduces fatigue, and helps increase my speed. My body doesn’t hurt so much after a long paddle. The powergrip handle is comfortable, and the entire one-piece paddle is super light. I wish I had bought this sooner. Thanks to Chris for taking time to help me find the best paddle.

  11. So, so good!

    tlord7-June 11, 2023 at 2:13 pm

I was looking for something a little more forgiving than my current 95 sq in full carbon paddle due to some shoulder pain when paddling frequently. I followed all of the sizing suggestions provided on the site (erring on the smaller/more flexible side when there was a choice), and ended up with a medium blade and 80″ length (I’m ~195 lbs, 6’0). It is PERFECT. I don’t notice any real loss of power, and my shoulders are happy even when paddling every day. Beautiful, well-made, and versatile–I’d recommend this to anyone that isn’t focused solely on racing.

  12. Glorious paddle

    myokiebobtail-June 5, 2023 at 9:12 am

I was able to get a version of this paddle designed for me (small hands and needing to paddle for hours at a time several days in a row) and it’s glorious! Chris was very helpful by email explaining one option I wasn’t sure about and helping me to choose. I just used this paddle on a multi-day ocean paddle-camping trip near Vancouver and felt like I was going about the same speed regardless of wind or the tides – and with WAY less fatigue. Just excellent. Thanks Chris!

  13. Just get it!

    TheDomi-June 2, 2023 at 12:01 pm

I was a bit skeptical in the smaller are paddles. But it really helps with endurance and speed. I can paddle longer at a higher rate compared to my old paddle. If you’re wanting a new paddle, just get it and you won’t regret it.

  14. A game changer

    kmpowell998-March 12, 2023 at 7:26 pm

I finally got to test out my 1-piece Tempo, going from a mid-range adjustable paddle. I never fully realized just how much paddle quality contributes to performance. The paddle is super light and handles very smoothly; it enters and releases very smoothly with very little lateral movement or scuffing on the rails of the board. It’s also gorgeous to look at. Get on Black Project’s mailing list while you can and look for their promotions. Their products are well worth the money.

  15. Super Versatile!

    Michael Arasim-August 8, 2022 at 3:07 pm

Loving it so far! It enters the water and releases super smoothly. This paddle seems super versatile! It is just as at home with long high power strokes as it is with short high cadence sprints. Nearly impossible to get any flutter regardless of how fast and sloppily you’re paddling. At 6’2″ and 200 pounds, I’m running an XL with the carbon100 shaft. It flexes just enough to not hurt my joints but, I get no sense that I’m leaving any power on the table.

  16. The paddle I've been searching for!

    Mark Canepa-April 29, 2022 at 5:54 pm

Thanks Chris for developing the paddle I’ve been searching for! Been stroking a 91sq in for 7 years and was a little skeptical on the medium size blade on the Tempo. After speaking with you I went with it and glad I did. Silky smooth catch, pop on the power phase (must be the 90 flex shaft), and the release is so quick and effortless. At 70 years young, 5’10”, 160, this blade fits me perfect. As a fitness/distance paddler it’s nice to vary the cadence during the session, knowing the shoulders will be happy. Highly recommended this paddle!!! Mark C. Moss landing, California
