SUP Race Fin For Increased Maneuverability, Tracking & Stability, Ideal For Ocean Racing & Downwind

The Maliko is a SUP racing and downwind fin designed to improve board maneuverability and glide. While best suited for downwind conditions, this fin also works great in large rivers with a strong flow. Achieving a faster board speed isn’t just about paddling harder, but being able to utilize the flow of the ocean The Maliko makes it possible to not only go faster, but more importantly, to have more fun.

  • Designed for intermediate and advanced paddlers in ocean and downwind conditions.
  • Progressive Surf Concept (PSC) for easy carving and control while riding swells.
  • Great for long, flowing glides on swells.
  • Short fin base increases positional tuning options, even on boards with short fin boxes.

  1. Great all around fin

    micro.1394 (verified owner)

The Maliko has provided a noticeable bump and speed and tracking over the Ray while not losing much stability at all. So far, this has been fantastic in ocean conditions for me.

  2. These fins make a difference!

    John Bowerman (verified owner)

For my Allstar, I finally took a dive into understanding different SUP fin configurations and the associated benefits. I’ve been using the standard Starboard fin made for their Allstar the last 18 months and have only recently tried out the Maliko and Ray fin configurations. No doubt, the Ray increased board stability, but in came at the cost of making buoy turns more of a challenge, pretty much as one would expect. The Maliko, on the other hand, not only made for more responsive buoy turns, but the overall speed was bumped up over the original fin by a solid 0.15 mph. I’ll go with the Maliko on flatter water and eventually while downwinding (or so I hope). But with plenty of confused water off the coast of San Diego, I’ll stick with the Ray configuration while paddling the open ocean. What a difference these fins really do make, I’m glad I found BlackProject.

  3. The best downwind fin and great for rougher ocean conditions

    Cliff Von Langen (verified owner)

I have been a SUP paddler for 12+ years and have owned many high-end boards. I had used stock fins until my girlfriend convinced me to try her Black Project fins. I used the Maliko in my SIC Bayonet and loved it; I bought a Maliko for myself. I have also found the Maliko to improve the performance of ,my Infinity Blackfish and my 404 LTD. The fin is very effective and feels “just right” accelerating quickly and turns easily. I am pleasantly surprised by how much I like this fin under the conditions for which it was designed. It has performed very well over distances when paddling my 14′ race boards with other good paddlers who are using both stock fins and Black Project fins. The fin is well thought our, practically perfect, and the finish is flawless. Mahalo!

  4. Maliko-a Gamechanger-Not just for the elite.

    Nathaniel Gwynne (verified owner)

It’s like spending a $175 for a whole new board.
A little background first; I’m 6’1” and I weigh 240lbs. I’m 52 and used to be a pretty good sprint paddler in the ‘90s. Until 7 months ago I’d been off the water for 20 years. But, I love to SUP outside of the harbor and I know when something makes my paddle easier and more fun. In layman’s terms. This fin helps keep the board as stable a much bigger fin without slowing you down like a big fin. It also lets you turn where you your big fin might leave you stuck in side chop struggling to get your nose back up wind.

  5. The Downwind/Distance fin for my Allstar

    billywilliams

Like a few others, I have two Black Project fins, the Maliko and the Tiger. I use my Maliko for downwind runs, blustery course work, and long distance races (over 2 hours). The fin tracks well, and is very fast, and provides an extra level of stability that really helps when my body gets tired. As a bigger paddler (over 200 lbs) I really appreciate the lift and stability generated by the fin without feeling like it is slowing me down.

  6. Super stable without being stuck

    Damon Toal-Rossi

Bought this fin along with a Condor to cover “heavy water” days and pure downwind runs. This fin works great. On downwinders and surf riding, it holds a good line but breaks free easily enough to link bumps. The same holds true for side waves, where it tracks well but allows me to “hop” back on course. Excellent compliment to a smaller fin, or for an “only” fin for bigger riders, lower cadence paddlers, and/or folks who just want a little more stability.

  7. Very fast; stable choppy conditions

    GN

The Maliko is fantastic in heavy winds and fast-moving currents. It provides just as much stability as my larger fins but proved much faster in calmer waters. The quality and finish of the fin is flawless. Highly recommended!

  8. Vote Maliko for Open Water

    stevea (verified owner)

I find the the Maliko to be the bigger, more stable brother of the Sonic. It is now my go-to fin when the open water of the San Francisco Bay starts whitecapping or when I don’t want to fatigue my legs so much over a longer paddle.

  9. Malikio fin - just brilliant

    Emma Hepplewhite

The Maliko has been brilliant on our local canals which (with Covid) are full of weed – it just slides off and I glide past everyone else trying to get lumps off their fins! I also did the Great Glen Challenge, an endurance race on Lochs and Canals in Scotland. It was brilliant on flat water and downwinding down Loch Ness. Great stability and straight-line tracking. Get one! You won’t regret it.

  10. Maliko V3

    Michael Klos

What a fun fin! Stable for the messy conditions and yet still loose enough to surf and downwind. Works well on my starboard Allstar 14 x24.5

  11. Downwind stability and steering

    jessegay (verified owner)

Good balance between maneuverability and solid tracking when downwinding in the Gorge. More stability and control than I got from my stock fin.

  12. Maliko. The best fin

    lasse.kontakt (verified owner)

A fantastic fin. This fin I can recommend. It creates stability and speed. and is really good for downwinder and great trackin on the open sea .

  13. One fin to rule them all!

    Brad Friesen (verified owner)

I picked up the new Maliko v3 to replace a v2 which unfortunately met its end during the Yukon River Quest. I am quite pleased with the new v3. The v3 tracks very nice and is quite stable. It has become my go to fin when paddling in strong wind or heavy chop, and also for longer distance paddling. Works great when drafting too. If you’re looking for one fin suitable for all conditions, pick up the Maliko. You won’t be disappointed.

  14. This fin could serve as a one fin quiver for the average racer

    ScottC

Just used the V3 maliko with 24″ Naish Maliko on a 22.5 mile race (half open ocean/half back bay) Fin ran through a gambit of conditions – chop, swell, DW conditions, current, wind and drafting. It excelled in all categories! I was hesitive using a smaller fin but it has fantastic hold, super tracking and great reactivity on the bumps. We don’t typically get DW’ers on the east coast for races but this one did and i had no problem linking bumps. In the flats it tracked so well and one of the easiest fins to foot steer while drafting. No bouy turns but i have done them and does a pretty damn good job. Clearly this fin could serve as a one fin quiver for the average racer. Very happy with my purchase!

  15. Great fin

    Gavin

Great fin, this is the most stable and yet equally fast fin I have. I repeat super stable.

  16. Great tracking

    Steve Arkell (verified owner)

Been running the Maliko on my custom Bark 14/23.5. This is such a good fin on this board, great tracking 15+ strokes per side or more. Good on turns, never feels sluggish.
I’m in Texas and paddle a variety of Lakes and rivers. The fin has just the right surface area in turbulence. Just forgiving enough to allow the board to flow w the river.
Looking forward to trying the new Ray as well. Keep up the innovation Chris. Great stuff. Cheers Steve

  17. Amazing job on the Maliko v3

    Glen Buchanan (verified owner)

I’ve been running the v2 and v3 basically on opposite days on both my Sprint (14×23”) and Allstar (14×23.5”) for the past number of weeks, and the stock Starboard Race Ultra 2.0

I used the V2 Mailko almost exclusively for the entire 2018 season…. and absolutely loved it. The only time I wasn’t using it was when I had loaned it out for someone else to try. The draft and surface area of the V2 were bang on perfect my size (6’2” 205lb) so I was a little skeptical on the V3 at first due to the decreased surface area, but the hold on the v3 is fantastic. I felt comfortable on both boards with the V3 within the first week. The biggest change point for me is the reactivity of the v3 going downwind…. Getting from bump to bump was easier, the board reacts quicker and I don’t feel like I’m fighting the board as much as did.

Amazing job on the V3….. Really great…..

  18. I am completely blown away at how amazing this fin is

    Tim Warner (verified owner)

I am completely blown away at how amazing this fin is. I have the Sonic which is also incredible for surfing, flat water and buoy turns. I was looking for a second fin that would allow stability and provide excellent tracking. I contacted black project immediately when I saw the Maliko V3 for sale. This fin does not catch weeds, tracks straight and is very fast. The last test was 6.6 miles at close to 6mph average. We also did a test downwinding and the longer profile really helps with steering the board and keeping you stable. I recommend this product for sure. Having the confidence going into all conditions is really awesome. Thanks so much guys.

  19. Downwind it feels fluid and responsive

    Chloë Blampied

Tracking is spot on upwind and going into swell, with no noticeable drag but then downwind it feels fluid and responsive. Perfect for people like me who don’t want to have to keep changing fins depending on the conditions. Similarly, if your budget means you can only have one fin, then this has to be the fin of choice, In my view, this is the fin that is suitable for all and for all occasions.
